Conquistadors Get Back to Winning Ways in Dominating Fashion

Head coach Jake Williams and his squad were trying to find a way to curb a recent three-game losing skid. A date with Seward County on Wednesday night was exactly what they needed as they won convincingly by a score of 92-67.

Like most Conquistador wins this season, this one snaps a 6-game losing streak to the Saints. The 25-point victory is the largest margin of victory over Seward County since 2013.

The Conquistadors came out with something to prove opening the game on a 16-4 run off the strength of a pesky pressing attack that allowed the Conqs to speed up the Seward County Saints. The Saints would pull within six at 18-12 after back-to-back threes by Erik Pratt, but that's the closest the score would get.

Dodge City continued their aggressive style of play scoring 22 points off of 15 first half turnovers by the Saints.

Sophomore Walyn Napper put an exclamation point on the first half with a steal off Saints' point guard, Samuel Henderson, that led to a Napper fast break dunk with four seconds left to put the score at 52-31 at intermission.

The Conquistadors began the first 6:30 of the second half on a 19-6 run leading to their largest lead of the game of 34 at 71-37.

The Saints immediately countered with a 13-0 run to cut the deficit down to 21 at 71-50 with 7:49 to play. That sparked the game's final run, a 14-5 spurt that included a block by fan favorite "The Big French Fry," Dylan Gory, and was capped off by a Tyler Stallworth baseline jumper with 3:27 to play.

"It was nice to see us get our swagger back," said head coach Jake Williams. "I thought we set the tone from the jump defensively and it helped us create a lot of transition opportunities for ourselves. We did a great job capitalizing on their mistakes. Offensively, I was really happy to see us hand out 21 assists on 33 made shots. Our assist numbers have been low lately and I think we have been a little stagnant. The team did a great job trusting our offense and sharing the ball. When we share the ball like that, we can score and be efficient with the best of them."

The Conqs were led in scoring with 16 by sophomores Dhieu Deing and Marlow Gilmore Jr. as they spearheaded an attack that saw four Conquistadors score in double digits and three more score 8-plus points. Mike Marsh added 12 points and Roger McFarlane scored 10. Walyn Napper and Tyler Stallworth showcased their all-around games. Napper, the team's leading scorer at 22.5 ppg, only scored eight points off five shots but dished out 11 assists, grabbed six rebounds and created three steals. Stallworth chipped in nine points as well to go with his three rebounds, two assists, four steals, one block. Freshman Emmanuel Jones came off the bench to score eight points and grab four rebounds for the Conquistadors.

Seward County were led by reserves Mike Rivera (11 points, five rebounds) and Jordan Chambers (10 points) as they went to their bench for most of the second half.

Dodge City moves to 7-3 on the season and 6-3 in the KJCCC as they keep pace with Hutchinson in the Jayhawk West. Seward County falls to 2-5 on the season and 2-5 in KJCCC play.

The Conqs are back in action on Saturday, February 27th as they host the Garden City Broncbusters in a conference double header. The women's game is slated to tip-off at 1:00 pm CST in the Dodge City Civic Center. Both contests will be live streamed. Fans are welcome and can purchase tickets here.
