Conquistadors Split Season Opening Series

The offense reigned supreme on a windy day in Southwest Kansas as the Dodge City Conquistador baseball program played their first double header in 353 days.

The McCook Indians came to town and the two programs split a pair of highly offensive games at Cavalier Field where routine fly balls can become 400-foot home runs with the right gust of wind.
Dodge City won the first contest 11-1 in 5 innings while McCook took the second game 19-13 in the full 7 innings.

The Conquistadors hit six home runs in the 12-innings played while the Indians added four more.

"We were excited to get back on the field, and I thought we did a lot of really good things from both an offensive and defensive standpoint," said head coach Phil Stephenson. "We just struggled on the mound in game two, but there were a lot more positives than negatives on the day as a whole."

Game One – 11-1 W

The Conquistadors got out to a hot start in their first game of the year scoring 10 runs in their first three innings of the season. A Kory Schmidt single to right field kicked off the scoring for the year and was quickly followed by a standup double with the bases loaded by Braden Dedrick that scored two runs for the Conqs.

McCook got on the board in the 2nd inning with a solo homerun to left field, but the Conquistadors quickly answered with back-to-back home runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jake Miller homered to left field to clear the bases and score two runs and Kory Schmidt promptly stepped up right after to hit an opposite field home run, extending the lead to 7-1.

After scoring three more runs in the 4th, the Conquistadors saw their lead balloon to nine runs in the bottom of the 5th. Ethan Baptie led the inning off with a standup triple. Baptie took home on a passed ball to put the Conquistadors up 11-1 and inciting the "mercy rule" of a 10-run lead after five innings.

Tanner Eyre got the start in the first game of the year, going 4.0 IP and striking out six. He gave up the lone run to the Indians and only allowed three hits in total. Joe Daneff (2-2), Jake Miller (1-3), and Kory Schmidt (2-3) each hit a homerun and brought in two RBIs apiece.

Game Two – 19-13 L

McCook seemed to get adjusted to the elements throughout the course of game one as they came out swinging to begin game two. A five run 1st inning by the Indians set the tone of the game early as they scored all their runs off Mathis Mauldin via two home runs before the Conquistadors even recorded an out.

Walker Greenlee replaced Mauldin in the 2nd, but the Indians offense was rolling by that point as they scored three runs each in the 2nd and 3rd innings off of Greenlee. Noah Thompson got the Conquistadors on the scoreboard with a 2-run homerun which was a part of a 3-run 3rd inning for the Conqs.

Up 11-3, the Indians would score their last eight runs of the game in monster 4th inning as they knocked the duo of Clay Kelley and Paiden Falcetti. McCook found themselves with the bases loaded on three separate occasions in the inning.

The Conquistadors would begin mounting a comeback as they meticulously scored five runs in the 4th, two in the 5th, and three in the 6th but their firepower wasn't enough to overcome the Indians hot hitting.

Dodge City's comeback was highlighted by sophomore Seth Ochoa's debut as a Conquistador. Entering the game in the 5th inning, Ochoa went 2-2 with two home runs and four RBIs in his only two plate appearances. Mathis Mauldin recorded the loss for the contest.

The Conquistadors are back in action today, February 24th as they head to Alva, OK to take on the Northwestern Oklahoma University JV team in a single, 9-inning game at 1:00 pm CST. They are back home on Monday, March 1st for a 9-inning game with Oklahoma Panhandle State University's JV team at 3:00 pm CST at Cavalier Field.
