Conquistador Rally Falls Short in Five Sets

The upstart Dodge City Conquistador volleyball program continues to be pesky as they took KJCCC West contender Barton County to five sets last night, losing 3-2.

Everything seemed to be going according to plan for Barton after taking the first two sets 25-19 and 25-21. Coach Jordan Bruere's squad didn't lose sight and fought back to win the next two sets 25-23 and 25-18.

Going point for point in the fifth set, the Conquistadors held an 8-7 lead at one point before falling behind 13-11. Trying to keep pace with #6 ranked Seward in the West, three-time KJCCC Player of the Week Mylena Testoni and the Barton Cougars had other plans as Testoni had two powerful kills to close out the match.

The Conquistadors brought Barton to a fifth set for the first time since they last beat the Cougars on August 31, 2016.

"We didn't end the night with a win, but this team fought to the end," said head coach Jordan Bruere. "It was exciting to see this team come in and take a Barton team who is receiving votes nationally to a close, five-set match. Our goal for the rest of the season is to not be out hustled, and I truly feel we didn't let that happen There were some key rally's that we were not as disciplined as we needed to be. These crucial plays helped Barton to finish on top. We are taking those moments as learning opportunities to fine tune some technical areas of our game and be more disciplined. I am excited to get back to work and prepare for two home games this week against two good conference teams."

The Conqs were led by a monster night by sophomore Ruby Osawey with her 23 kills and nine blocks. Aneesa Thompson also added nine blocks on the night, while Hillary English was secon in kills with 14. Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu led the way with 52 assists.

Dodge City falls to 2-8 on the season and 2-4 in KJCCC play. The Barton Cougars stay tied atop the KJCCC West with a record of 3-0 in conference play and 11-2 overall.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Thursday, February 26th when they welcome the Independence Pirates to the Student Activity Center for a 6:30 pm CST matchup. Tickets are on sale for the contest and the event will be live streamed.
