First Half Run Dooms Conquistadors on the Road

Walyn Napper's career-high 39 points wasn't enough as the Conquistador men's basketball program dug themselves too big a hole early, falling to the Hutchinson Blue Dragons last night 102-95.

A Napper jumper with 13:20 to go in the 1st half to put the Conquistadors within one at 13-12 and was the closest the game would be as the Blue Dragons proceeded to go on a 22-0 run that was ultimately the deciding factor of the game.

After the Conquistadors got down 35-12, they outplayed the Blue Dragons on the score board the remainder of the game, but the 23-point deficit was too much to overcome.

Down 50-40 at halftime, the Conquistadors got within six points twice in the second half. However, the Blue Dragons had an answer each time, typically in the form of sophomore Matt Mayers.

Mayers, the reigning NJCAA Player of the Week, recorded a massive 35-point, 13-rebound stat line to lead the Blue Dragon charge.

"You can't dig yourself into a 23-point hole on the road at Hutch or anywhere else in this conference and expect to win," said head coach Jake Williams. "With that said, I'm proud of the fight and grit we showed. We refused to quit and cut the lead to six twice before losing by seven. We could have easily thrown in the towel, so I'm proud of my guys for that."

The loss to the Blue Dragons extends the Conquistadors losing streak to three games and moves them into a tie atop the KJCCC West with Hutchinson after starting the season 6-0.

"This three-game skid has provided a lot of lessons for us. I truly believe it is molding and preparing us for something special down the line," added Williams. "We have to keep our blinders on and stay focused. All of our energy moves to Seward now."

The Conquistadors were led by Napper's game-high 39 points as he also added four rebounds and two assists. Dhieu Deing showcased his shooting ability to the tune of 22 points. The sophomore began the game 0-7 from three but made 4-6 after the Hutchinson scoring run to help fuel the Conquistador comeback attempt. Marlow Gilmore Jr. was the third Conq to score in double-digits going a perfect 7-7 from the field for 14 points. Freshman Roger McFarlane continued to provide grit to the starting lineup as he grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to go with his seven points.

Outside of Mayers' 35-point effort, the Blue Dragons put four others in double figures in a balanced attack. Majok Kuath scored 13 of his 22 in the second half and Stephen Gabriel also added 18 points and six rebounds. Jaden Okon and Isaiah Budjoso chipped in 10 points apiece.

Dodge City falls to 6-3 on the season and 5-3 in KJCCC play. Hutchinson moves to 6-3 and 5-3 as well to place them in a tie with Dodge City.

The Conquistadors are back in action on Wednesday, February 24th when they host Seward County in a game at 7:00 pm CST in the Dodge City Civic Center. The women's game has been postponed due to health and safety concerns within the Seward County program. Ticket sales are live and can be found here. Doors will open at 6:30 pm.
