Conquistadors Face Tough Loss Against #3 Coffeyville

The #22 ranked Dodge City Conquistadors welcomed the #3 Coffeyville Red Ravens to town in a highly anticipated top-25 matchup of two programs who are expected to be Jayhawk Conference contenders.

Led by sophomore guard Tylor Perry, the Red Ravens made big plays late in the second half to escape Dodge City with a narrow victory, 65-58.

The first 34 minutes of the game served as a clash of titans, providing six ties and 10 lead changes. Despite both teams holding leads as large as eight points, neither was able to extend their led to double digits as both coaches continued to have an answer for one another.

With the Conquistadors holding a 53-47 lead and fresh off of a 9-0 scoring run, the 6:03 mark of the second half served as the final answer by the Red Ravens as sophomore Tylor Perry came alive to score 15 of his game high 25 points over the remainder of the game.

The Conquistadors held the Red Ravens leading scorer (16.8 ppg) in check up to that point, as Perry struggled to find space only scoring seven points and shooting 1-7 from the three-point line in the first half.

"I'm really proud of our effort defensively and on the glass. I thought it was our best defensive game of the season," said head coach Jake Williams. "I feel like we out-played an incredibly talented team in Coffeyville for 34-minutes, but they made the big plays down the stretch and we didn't, so all the credit goes to them. I have a lot of respect for them and what they do. I think both teams are pretty confident in seeing each other down the road, but for now we have to shift our focus on Hutch as we start West play."

Though Coffeyville is seen as one of the tougher programs in NJCAA basketball, the Conquistadors controlled the glass all game as they matched the Red Ravens with 13 offensive rebounds, but out-rebounded them 45-36 on the defensive glass.

The Conquistadors were led by sophomore Dhieu Deing's 20 points, including five three-pointers. Sophomore Walyn Napper flirted with double-double territory as he scored 16 points, and dished out nine assists to go with his three rebounds, two blocks, and one steal. Mike Marsh was also close to a double-double as he grabbed 13 rebounds and scored nine points to go with his two blocks. Roger McFarlane was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time all year and led the Conquistadors with 15 rebounds in 35 minutes of action, both season highs for the freshman guard.

The Red Ravens were led by Perry's 25 points on 10-18 from the field, but he also added four steals. Sophomore Bostyn Holt added 12 points and six rebounds. Blaise Keita, a recent Nebraska signee, led the way on the glass for Coffeyville as he grabbed 12 rebounds to go with his eight points and four blocks.
The Conquistadors drop their second straight on the season after starting 6-0 to move to 6-2 and 5-2 in KJCCC play. The #3 Red Ravens remain undefeated on the season at 10-0 and 8-0 as they withstand their toughest test of the young season thus far.

The Conquistadors have a quick turnaround as they are back in action on Monday, February 22 as both women's and men's basketball programs begin KJCCC West play and travel to Hutchinson for a conference-double header. The women's game is slated to begin at 5:30 pm CST and a live stream link will be available.
