Conquistador Volleyball Gets Back on Track with Straight Set Victory

The Dodge City Conquistadors got back into the win column last night by taking down the Beavers of Pratt Community College with a 3-0 victory.

After winning their first match of the season, Conquistador volleyball undertook a gauntlet of a schedule, losing their following seven matches. A trip to Pratt, Kansas was just what the doctor ordered for the Conqs as they dismantled the Beavers with a spirited style of play.

The Conquistadors jumped out on Pratt as they raced to an 18-6 lead in the first set. Following a timeout and a miniature Beaver run, the Conquistadors reclaimed their form and took the first set 25-18 after a thunderous Ruby Osawey kill.

The Conquistadors would go on to claim at least an eight-point lead in the last two sets winning 25-17 and 25-14.

The Conquistadors were led by sophomore Ruby Osawey's 13 kills, nine digs, and three blocks. Freshman Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu was all over the court for the Conquistadors. The setter exhibited her usual production by contributing 27 assists on the evening, but also added three aces and six kills as she routinely fooled the Beaver defense with an array of deceptive dumps.

"We came to play last night and that was awesome to see," said head coach Jordan Bruere. "Our goal for the night was to not be out hustled and we certainly got that job done. Despite missing a few players, we came together as a team and picked up a team win. Ruby [Osawey] came up big for us getting on fire defensively at the net and in the back row."

Dodge City moves to 2-7 on the season and 2-3 in KJCCC play while the Beavers fall to 2-5 and 1-5. The win for the Conqs also breaks a 7-match losing streak on the season as well as a 4-match losing streak to the Pratt Beavers.

The Conqs are scheduled to be back in action on Monday, February 22^nd as they host the Barton Cougars. The match is scheduled for 6:30 pm CST in the Student Activity Center. The doors will open to fans at 6:00 pm CST and tickets will go on sale Friday, February 19^th at 8:00 am CST.
