Cowley Hits 25 Threes, Hands Conquistadors First Loss of Season

The Cowley Tigers made 25 of 60 threes (42%) and saw two players score 30-plus points as they took down Dodge City Community College completed a sweep of Conquistador basketball on the day.

The loss is the first of the season for the Conquistadors and the first of the career as a Conquistador for head coach Jake Williams as they started the season an impressive 6-0.

Cevin Clark and Moun'tae Edmundson started hot and stayed hot as they combined for 17 threes between the two of them. They set the tone early in the game with an array of transition and pull-up threes that allowed the Tigers to set up their vaunted trapping press.

Despite scoring over 100 points on the contest, the Conquistadors couldn't find their stroke in the first half as they went 2-12 (17%) from behind the arc and saw themselves get down by as many as 26 points in the half.

The woes continued into the second half as the Conquistadors finished 3-24 (13%) from three for the game. Combine that with Cowley's hot shooting allowed the Tigers to get out in transition and play a type of game that they are normally accustomed to.

Able to set up their press, the Tigers forced the Conquistadors into 26 turnovers on the game. Cowley was able to score 27 points off of the Conquistador turnovers.

"All the credit goes to Cowley here," said head coach Jake Williams. "We were out-coached, out-played, out-toughed, and out-worked tonight. This bye week is exactly what we need to tighten some things back up, especially on the defensive end. This team has the potential to be special, but we have to be tougher and more committed on the defensive end. That starts at the top with me and our leaders."

Offense was no issue for the Conquistadors as they scored over the century mark for the second time this season. Sophomore Walyn Napper continued his excellent offensive play with 31 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Four other Conquistadors scored in double figures. Marlow Gilmore Jr. scored 15 points and grabbed four rebounds. Dhieu Deing almost had a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. Roger McFarlane and Hasahnn Reynolds both put out solid efforts off the bench as well. McFarlane scored 16 points and snagged eight rebounds while Reynolds added 11 points and three rebounds.

The Tigers tied a program record with their 143 points. Cevin Clark (30 points) and Moun'tae Edmundson (34 points) combined for 64 points including 17/36 (47%) from three. There we no shortage of monster outings for Cowley as sophomore Dalen Ridgnal also scored 21 points to go with 20 rebounds and five steals for good measure. Mike'l Henderson (13 points), Shemarri Allen (12 points), and Raishaun Brown (12 points) also scored in double-figures for Cowley.

Dodge City has a week off before they are back in action at home on Saturday, February 20th in a conference double header with Coffeyville Community College. The games are slated for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Fans will be allowed in a limited capacity, so stay tuned for information on how to purchase tickets.
