Conquistadors Stay Perfect with Road Win in Iola

The cardiac Conqs strike again as the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team rolled into Iola last night and escaped with a narrow victory.

Opening the game with a 21-6 run, the Conquistadors looked like they'd run away with the contest early but the Red Devils from Allen Community College had other ideas. They would use a run of their own to get the Conquistador lead down to eight at intermission, 36-28.

The Conquistadors opened up the second half with the same intensity they opened the game and built up another hefty double-digit lead.

Again, the Red Devils simply wouldn't lie down. The Conqs built several double-digit leads only to have the home team scrap back into the game thanks to some crucial shot making by Tyren Shelley (18 points) and rugged play inside of Amadou Traore (18 points, 11 rebounds).

Just when it looked like the Conquistadors would finish out the game with a Dhieu Deing three to put the Conqs up by 14 with five minutes to play, Allen began mounting their final push.

A Freddie Word three in the left corner with 1:12 to play by the Red Devils brought the first tie of the game since a 0-0 start. Sophomore Dhieu Deing, returning from a one game absence, quickly shut the home crowd down with a three just seven seconds later to put the Conquistadors ahead 73-70.

A defensive stop by the Conquistadors gave them the ball with Deing at the charity stripe and a chance to all but end the game. Deing, an 87% free throw shooter on the year, missed the front of the one-and-one to open the door for the Red Devils.

After a foul with two seconds left sent Allen to the line, the Red Devils made their first free throw with plans of missing the second and getting a tip-in to send the game to overtime.

The second free throw flew off the back iron and the home team had a shot at a tip-in only to see it fall off the glass giving the Conquistadors the road victory.

"That was a great team road win," said head coach Jake Williams. "We have to do a better job at putting teams away though. We can't keep giving other teams opportunities by beating ourselves. Credit to Dhieu Deing and Mike Marsh for making huge plays down the stretch. Despite putting ourselves in that position, however, I thought we did a good job executing situational basketball in the final stretch."

The Conquistadors were led by Mike Marsh's 18 points and five rebounds. Deing came off the bench to score 15 points, including four triples, to go with his seven rebounds and three steals. Two-time reigning KJCCC player of the week Walyn Napper and sophomore Hasahnn Reynolds both added eight points for the Conqs. Napper also dished out 12 assists on the night including a highlight reel off-the-backboard assist to Marlow Gilmore for a dunk.

Nappers 8.7 assists per game puts him at first nationally amongst NJCAA Division I players who have played more than one game.

Allen was led by the duo of Tyren Shelley and Amadou Traore, each with 18 points. Shelley knocked down four threes on the night and Traore grabbed 11 rebounds to go with his four blocked shots. Leading scorer Freddie Word also contributed 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

The win breaks a five-game losing streak by the Conquistadors to Allen as they stay undefeated at 6-0 and 5-0 in KJCCC play. The loss moves Allen to 3-4 on the year and 2-3 in the conference.

Dodge City is back in action on Saturday, February 13th as both squads head to Arkansas City for a conference double-header with Cowley College. The women's game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 pm CST with the men's game to follow. Both games will be broadcasted live on Cowley Sports Network, but the link will be able to be found on ConqTV at GoConqs.com.
