Slow Start Dooms Conquistadors on the Road

Slow Start Dooms Conquistadors on the Road

The Cowley Tigers jumped out to a 30-13 first quarter lead on the Conquistadors as they cruised to a 95-65 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Imploring an up-tempo style of play, the Tigers were able to speed the Conquistadors up as they forced 15 first half turnovers. The ability to get out in transition led to plenty of open looks for the home team. Sophomore Seanna Boltz connected on four first half triples on her way to 14 points in the half and the Tigers hit seven total for the half.

Sophomore Emery Maze atempted to keep the Conquistadors hanging around with her 14 first half points.

The second half proved to be more of the same as the Tigers forced the Conqs into 15 more turnovers to make an even 30 on the game and knocked down six more triples. Cowley finished the contest with 13 made threes to shoot 37% (13-35) for the game.

"Obviously what we're going through as a team now isn't fun," said head coach Zach Loll of the Conquistadors' recent 5-game losing skid. "However, we have to know that these struggles are teaching us and will lead us to success. We just have to stay the course."

The Conquistadors were led by Maze's 19 points and three rebounds. Freshman Payton James added 11 points to go with her four rebounds. The two scoring outputs were season highs for the duo. Freshman Keimora Banks chipped in eight points and four rebounds. The trio combined for 38 of the teams 65 points on an efficient 13/21 (62%) from the floor. The rest of the team combined to shoot 11/35 (31%) leading to a 43% from the field for the day.

Cowley was led by Seanna Boltz' 28 points. Boltz made eight threes on the afternoon, four in each half, on only 15 attempts to shoot 53%. The sophomore is coming off a 29-point outburst against Colby on February 10th. The Tigers saw three other players score in double figures as well. Kalyne Daniels (13 points), Martyna Kowalska (12 points), and Baylee Fincher (11 points) each contributed to a balanced Tiger attack.

The Conquistadors fall to 2-5 on the season and 1-5 in KJCCC play. The Tigers move to 5-3 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.

Dodge City has a week off before they are back in action at home on Saturday, February 20th in a conference double header with Coffeyville Community College. The games are slated for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Fans will be allowed in a limited capacity, so stay tuned for information on how to purchase tickets.
