Women's Basketball Tops Garden City Behind Strong Defense

Dodge City women's basketball made it two wins in a row beating rival Garden City on Saturday with a 51-39 decision at home.

The win moves the Conquistadors to 8-3 on the season and 3-2 in KJCCC action.

The Conqs would utilize a defensive performance that stymied Garden City throughout the day as the Broncbusters struggled shooting and turned the ball over at a high rate. Conqs led just 12-8 after the first quarter but would put together a 17-9 second quarter and lead 29-17 at the half. The second half saw both teams struggle from the floor as only a combined 13 points were scored in the third quarter. Conqs would go on to use their first half led to cap the win.

Defense for the Conqs held the Broncbusters to just 26% shooting and 18.8% from three-point range; Garden City's 39 points is the lowest allowed by the Conq to a Conference opponent since November 15th, 2017 (beat Pratt 44-34). Conqs have held all five Conference foes this season to under 38% shooting from the floor.

Conqs shot 35.6% from the floor as a team and 15-18 from the free-throw line, while both teams struggle with turnovers each recording 27 in the game.

Jada Burton recorded her seventh double-figure game of the season posting a team-high 17 points on 4-7 shooting and went 8-8 from the free-throw line. Bree Stephens added nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds while adding two steals and two blocks. Jenna Rose Mafua chipped in six points, four rebounds, and three steals, while both Blanche Mampuya and Desintee Paulk each scored five points off the bench.

Up next stands a big test for the Conqs as they will host #7 Butler in the final home game before the holiday break on Wednesday, December 8th.
