Dodge City women picked up their third win in a row and first over the Butler Grizzlies since January 6th, 2016 which also mark the last time that both the women and men beat Butler on the same night. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Grizzles for the Conquistadors.
Behind another solid defensive performance and strong play throughout the Conqs snagged a 60-37 win over #14 Butler. The win moved the Conqs to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in KJCCC action as the Conqs are one of four teams in the Conference with two Conference losses and only one has one loss in conference play.
The first half saw the lead change hand multiple times and the game remain tight as the Conqs would trail 17-16 at the end of the first quarter but behind a 14-10 second quarter would head into the locker room at halftime up 30-27. After a sluggish start to the second half for both teams that included a long scoring drought, the Conqs would outscore the Grizzles 14-11 to push the lead to six points entering the final 10 minutes of the contest. Butler would keep it close down to the wire but
Krystina Hagood stepped to the free-throw line and capped the game with some late free-throws lifting the Conqs to a 60-57 win. Conqs are now 9-0 this season when leading at halftime.
Conqs shot 37.3% from the floor in the contest with 11 assists on 19 made field goals, while going 17-22 from the free-throw line and defensively forced 27 turnovers and had 14 steals.
Bree Stephens had a career-high 21 points on 8-11 shooting and went 4-5 from the charity stripe adding five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Jenna Rose Mafua also had a career night with 13 points hitting three three-pointers while adding five rebounds and four steals.
Krystina Hagood and
Jada Burton each chipped in seven points, while
Teona Pop Stojanova off the benched tallied six points and grabbed a pair of rebounds.
The tough week continues on Saturday for the Conqs when they travel to #25 Hutchinson on Saturday, December 11th for a 5:30 pm tipoff.
