Dodge City Community College women's basketball team hit the road for a three-game slate down in Midland, Texas and the Midland Classic action started with the host for the Conquistadors on Thursday night. While the Conqs gave Midland a run for their money it was the home team Midland coming out on top 64-57.
The loss moves the Conqs to 2-1 on the season.
Conqs worked out an early 8-4 advantage on Midland in the first quarter but Midland would counter to draw within one and then with an 11-2 run to finish the quarter the Conqs trailed 20-12 to Midland. That lead grew to as many as 14 points in the second quarter ad Midland kept their run going early in the second quarter. Conqs countered with another run pushing back to draw within three points but at halftime, Dodge City found themselves down 37-30.
In the second half, the Conqs push continued and with a
Destinee Paulk three-pointer with 4:48 left in the third quarter, the Conqs took their first lead since early in the game going up 42-41 and went up 44-41 behind a 13-2 run. Midland answered the Conqs run with an 8-0 run late in the third quarter to regain the lead and head into the fourth quarter up 49-47. In the fourth, both teams went scoreless for the first three minutes of action but then Midlan put together another 8-0 and that separation proved to be too much for the Conqs to overcome as Dodge City fell 64-57.
Pacing the Conqs on the night and for the third straight game was
Krystina Hagood who dropped 21 points on 9-18 shooting and added six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Jada Burton chipped in double figures with 11 points and recorded three assists.
Bree Stephens filled the stat sheet nicely with seven points, nine rebounds, and three steals. Both teams shot under 40% from the floor for the game and the rebounding battle was nearly even as Midland was +2.
Conqs have two more contests in Texas as part of the Midland Classic as they will take on Western Texas at 12:30 pm on Friday and Ranger at 12:30 pm on Saturday.
