Lady Conqs Drop Home Opener in Five Sets

Head coach Jordan Bruere's first home match in her inaugural season didn't go quite as planned as the Lady Conquistadors dropped their home opener by a score of 3-2 to Colby Community College Thursday night in the Student Activity Center.

However, it is apparent that there is plenty to be hopeful for in this new era of Conquistador Volleyball.

"Last night was a tough loss. We fought hard but fell short in the end to a solid Colby team," said Bruere. "This is a great lesson early on for us though. We are taking this feeling, learning from it and we're only going to get better."

The Lady Conquistadors raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first two sets winning by scores of 25-16 and 30-28, respectively.

In the first set, the Lady Conqs got out to a 10-4 lead on the Lady Trojans before Colby cut the deficit to three at 15-12. Coach Bruere's squad put their foot back on the gas though and finished the set on another 10-4 run.

The second set was a tightly contested matchup that featured 10 tie scores and six lead changes with four of those lead changes coming when both teams had 20 points. Some clutch kills by Ruby Osawey and Hillary English provided the spark at the right time for the Lady Conquistadors as they took the set 30-28.

The Colby Trojans, who finished 24-7 last year and tied for 2nd in the Jayhawk West, fought back to take sets three and four by scores of 25-19 and 25-17.

The fifth set was a battle within itself as it featured nine more tied scores and six lead changes. While both teams held leads late in the set, it was Colby who came out on top by a score of 16-14. A fitting fifth set for a match that featured 31 tie scores and 19 lead changes.

The first two sets were the first won by the Lady Conquistadors since they beat the Trojans last in 2011.

"Two big contributors for us were Hillary English and Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu. Hillary came away with 21 kills and 18 digs, getting her first double-double of the season," said Coach Bruere.

The Lady Conqs were led in kills by English's 21 kills while Ruby Osawey added 13 and Abby Francis garnered 10. Sina Toroslu and Aneesa Thompson each registered three blocks a piece and Nur Yaren Turkmenoglu had 60 assists on the night.

Coach Bruere's squad hits the road next week as they take on the defending Jayhawk Conference champion and current #3 team in the country, the Seward County Saints on February 3rd before heading to McCook, Nebraska on Friday and Saturday for the McCook Community College Tournament.

The Lady Conquistadors are back home Monday, February 8th against Butler Community College at 6:00 pm CST in the Student Activity Center.
