Lady Conqs Take Conference Opener in Straight Sets

Lady Conqs Take Conference Opener in Straight Sets
 
First year head coach Jordan Bruere is ushering a new era of Conquistador volleyball the right way as her squad went to Independence Community College last night and left with a straight set victory.

"We came ready to compete today," said Bruere. "We all have been anticipating this day for so long and it showed. We served tough and did a good job keeping Indy out of system but we knew they wouldn't give up without a fight."

The Lady Conquistadors certainly did come out ready to play. Paced by nine aces in the first set, including five by freshman Abby Francis, the Conqs blitzed the Pirates from the jump winning 25-8 and they didn't look back.

Independence applied some pressure in the second set, but Coach Bruere's squad didn't back down as they won  25-20 and finished what they started in the third set with a score of 25-15. The Lady Conqs found themselves tied in the third set at 9-9 only to finish the match on a 16-6 run.

Aces were wild for the Conquistadors as they had 16 on the match. They were led by Francis' six and sophomore Bruna Torres' five. Sophomore Ruby Osawey (10) and freshman Hillary English (eight) led the way in kills. Freshman Nur Yaren Türkmenoglu was in a giving mood all night as she set up her teammates to the tune of 33 assists.

It's worth noting that this is the first conference win for the Conquistador volleyball program over a team not named Garden City in three seasons.

"This was a great start to conference play as we set the tone and continue to move forward," Bruere remarked. "We have two days to fine tune parts of our game and then we're right back at it Thursday on our home court," she concluded.

The Lady Conquistadors are back at it Thursday, January 28th in their home opener against the Colby Trojans in the Student Activity Center. While fans won't be allowed, the match will be livestreamed on ConqTV!
