Conquistadors Take Series From Frank Phillips

The Conquistadors were on the road this past weekend, taking on Frank Phillips College down in Canyon, Texas, on the campus of West Texas A&M. After dropping the opener on Friday by the score of 17-12, the Conquistadors came back on Saturday to win both games of the double header with identical scores of 12-11.
 
Game 1
Hayden Wilcox earned the start for the Conquistadors, and immediately started off with a 1-2-3 first inning. The Conquistadors would follow up by scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a Jake Miller single to center field. Frank Phillips would counter with three runs in the top of the second, and would go on to score five in the third, a run in the fourth inning, and tack on four more in the fifth and seventh inning.
Wilcox would take the loss on the day for the Conquistadors after going 1.2 innings and allowing 3 earned runs. Offensively, the Conquistadors finished game one with 11 hits, 12 runs, 10 walks, and were hit four times. Connor Kessler and Miller would each finish with multiple hits, while Ryan Santos, Hector Carrillo, Luke Smith, Joe Daneff, Kessler, and Miller would each finish with 2 RBI's a piece.
 
Game 2
After trailing by as many as five runs, the Conquistadors rallied for two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to send it to extra innings before scoring three more in the eighth inning to win the opening game of Saturday's double header by the score of 12-11.
Dodge City would need all 17 hits and none bigger than Jake Miller's 2-out, 2-run home run to tie the game in the top of the 7th inning to knot the score up at 8-8. The Conquistadors would tally eight extra base hits in the game.
Evan Nichols would start on the hill for the Conquistadors. He would go 5 innings, allowing 6 earned runs, while striking out 4. Phillip Figueroa would come in and throw a scoreless 6th inning before being relieved by Hunter Moseley. He would earn his first win of his Dodge City career after going two innings, allowing 3 earned runs, and striking out 3.
 
Game 3
Another seventh inning comeback was needed by the Conquistadors to rally and win the night cap by the score of 12-11.
Connor Kessler started on the mound, and would go 4.2 innings while striking out 7, walking 0 and giving up 5 earned runs. Alex Fietek would earn the win for the Conquistadors after throwing 1.1 innings and allowing 3 earned runs. Tanner Eyre would earn his first save in his college career after throwing a scoreless 7th inning and striking out the final hitter of the game.
The offense was the story as the Conquistadors knocked out 11 hits in the game including six extra base hits, including another home run from Miller. The offense would start off with three runs in the top of the first, before finishing strong with three runs in the top of the 5th, two runs in the 6th, and four runs in the 7th. Kessler, Carrillo, Smith, Miller would all finish with multiple hits in the game.
 
Up Next
The Conquistadors will open up KJCCC play with a weekend tilt against Colby CC. The series will begin with a double header at Colby on Thursday, March 5th, and finish with a double header at Caviler Field on Saturday, March 7th. First pitch both days will be 1:00pm.
