Conq Softball Earns Split

(Dodge City, KS) -- The Dodge City Community College offense had another good day, scoring twenty runs over the two games, leading to a split against Western Texas College.

The first game of the day started with lots of scoring. Western Texas would open the first with two runs. Dodge City Community College would answer immediately with a five-run bottom half of the first. A pair of doubles by Lexy Perez and Courtney Huff scored the first three runs. The fourth and fifth scored on a single by Ericka Calderon. The Conqs bats did not produce anything of note in the second. Going into the bottom half of the third, the Conqs were down 8-5. They would cut the deficit to 8-7 on a Cayley Best home run. The two-run shot was her second on the season. Going into the bottom of the sixth, the Conqs would score one more on a single by Perez cutting the Western Texas lead to 9-8. Unfortunately, the Conqs would not be able to score any more and the Westerners would add one more in the seventh to come away with the 10-8 victory.

The Conqs pitching would be better in the second game, and the hitting would continue to produce. The second inning is where the scoring would start for each team, with the Westerners scoring three in the top half, and the Conqs answering with four of their own. Alex Pacheco would knock in two runs on a triple, and be followed by a pair of singles from Best, and Espinoza, each scoring a run. The Conquistadors would not score again, until the bottom of the fifth. Down 6-4, Huff singled to cut it to 6-5. A Pacheco base hit and error would allow three runs to come in giving the Conqs an 8-6 lead. Later in the inning, Samantha Montano hit a single, scoring two more runs to give the Conquistadors a 10-6 lead. For good measure, Gianna Browdy hit her third home run of the year, giving Dodge City a 12-6 lead in the sixth that they would hold onto, getting the win.

After the two games, the Conquistadors move to 16-14 on the year. They have a few days off and are not scheduled to play again until 4/13 against Colby Community College.
