Conq Softball Sweeps Seward

(Dodge City, KS) -- The Dodge City Community College softball team played well in all facets of the game on Sunday, allowing them to sweep Seward County on Sophomore Day.

The first game started with Seward getting out to an early 1-0 lead, scoring a run in the first inning. That would be one of the few times they held a lead on the day, and it would be short lived as the Conqs would take a 4-1 lead in the second inning. Jessica Espinoza hit a two RBI single, and was followed by a pair of base hits from Samantha Montano and Lexy Perez. Neither team would score again until Seward cut into the lead in the fifth innings, scoring two to trim the Conq lead to 4-3. The Conqs would answer with a run in the bottom half when Karissa Avila scored on a passed ball. For good measure the Conquistadors would add four more in the sixth. The first run was scored by Caley Best, the remaining three were via doubles by Montano, and Avila. Espinoza pitched well in game one also, going a complete seven innings, and giving up just one earned run to earn her sixth victory on the season.

The Conqs came out swinging hot bats in game two, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Montano started it with a double. A couple batters later, Avila knocked her in with a base hit. Later in the inning Avila would score on a base hit by Courtney Huff. In the second inning, Espinoza kicked off the scoring with an RBI single. Ericka Calderon would score on a passed ball. Perez, and Avila would knock in a run on a single and a double giving the Conqs a 7-1 lead. Seward would cut the deficit to 7-4, scoring three runs in the fourth inning. In the bottom half the Conqs answered with a run on a double by Perez. The Conquistadors would seal the game in the fifth innings, first scoring on a single by Calderon. The next batter, Espinoza doubled to give the Conqs the 11-4 lead. Montano would end the game, singling to end it in five innings, 12-4.
