(Dodge City, KS) -- The Dodge City Community College Baseball team got back a little bit of its mojo this week. After losing eleven of its last twelve games in conference play they were able to win two of the four games against Cloud County.
The first game was heavy on the offense. It started well for Dodge City, scoring three in the first inning. The first two came on a two-run home run, the eleventh of the season by
Garrett McGowan. Later in the inning,
Ryan Dos Santos would hit a single to score the third run of the inning. That score would stay the same until a big third inning for Cloud County where they scored six runs. The Conquistadors would answer with a run in each of the third and fourth innings on a solo shot by
Logan Murany, and
Spencer Marcus hitting a sacrifice fly to score McGowan but were down 7-5 going into the sixth inning. Each team would add a run in the sixth. With the Conqs down 8-6 heading into the seventh, Cloud would add two more insurance runs to go on to win 10-6.
In game two, Dodge City would strike early once again, scoring a run in the first on a
Cameron Fritz double. Cloud proceeded to score three in the second, getting themselves out to an early 3-1 lead and that score would hold up until the fifth inning when the Conqs bats got going. Three singles by
Conner Kessler,
Trey Vasquez, and McGowan scored a run apiece, giving the Conqs a 4-3 lead.
Cameron Fritz flew out, scoring Vasquez. Two batters later, Marcus hit an RBI single. The next batter, Santos flew out, scoring one more to give the Conqs a six-run inning, and a 7-3 lead. Dodge City scored one more on a Fritz single and that is all they would need thanks to a pair of good pitching performances.
Luke Boline threw 6.1 innings giving up four hits and three earned runs. He left the game in the seventh with the bases loaded and
Tyler Whalen took care of it from there. He closed the game out, going 2.2 innings, giving up no hits and striking out four.
The first game in Concordia did not go well for the Conquistadors, as they lost to 12-2 in five innings. Dodge City started the scoring on an RBI single by
Garrett McGowan in the first inning. Cloud tied it up in the bottom half and then it would all go downhill for the Conqs. The T-Birds scored eight in the second, and would one in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Santos singled in the fourth to knock in the second run for Dodge City, and that is all they would get, falling in five innings.
The fourth game of the series, and second in Concordia would see the Conqs bounce back. They did not score a ton of runs, but thanks to good pitching they would not need it. Cloud started the game off in the first with a two-run home run. That lead would last for a while but eventually, the Conquistador bats would start up. A
Hector Carrillo sac fly in the fourth cut the Cloud lead to 2-1. In the fifth, Kessler hit a two-run homer to take the lead 3-2. In the seventh, McGowan would add two insurance runs on his twelfth home run of the season to give the Conqs the 5-2 victory.
Padraic Walsh threw six innings and gave up two runs on five hits. He was relieved by
Joe Milano who threw three shutout innings, giving up two hits.
After the four-game series, the Conqs moved to 22-22 overall, and 6-18 in conference play.
