(Dodge City, KS) --Â The Dodge City Community College Baseball team struggled to get much offense going at all on Sunday. They relied on their pitching to keep them in both games, the hitting did not produce as much as needed in the game one, falling 4-3, but they came up big when it was most needed in game two, getting the 6-5 win.Â
Â
Pratt was able to jump out to an early lead in game one scoring two runs in the second inning. The Conqs, meanwhile, were not able to get anything across until they scored a run in the third on a rare triple by
Garrett McGowan. For the most part, both teams' bats were relatively quiet but Dodge City was able to score two big runs in the fifth, giving the Conquistadors the 3-2 lead.
Trey Vasquez was able to get a run across on the sacrifice bunt, and
Drake Angeron would score on a sacrifice fly hit by
Cameron Fritz. Unfortunately, Pratt would immediately answer in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs to take a 4-3 lead that they would not give up. The Conqs would get just one baserunner on in the last two innings, falling 4-3.
Padraic Walsh did a great job keeping the Conqs offense in the game, throwing a complete 7-inning game, giving up 8 hits, 3 earned runs, and striking out 6. He, unfortunately, would be saddled with the loss.
Â
The Conqs got more good performances on the mound in game two as the combination of
Jonny McIntyre,
Noah Webb,
Alex Fietek, and
Joe Milano would give up 11 hits, and just 4 earned runs while striking out nine. Those performances would allow for the Conquistadors to stay in the game despite scoring just 1 run in the first eight innings. That run came across via a sacrifice fly by
Conner Kessler. Because of the struggling bats, Dodge City would go into the bottom of the ninth down 5-1 without much hope or chance given how their bats performed up to that point. They would awaken when needed most as they came up with 5 runs in the inning. It started with a Fritz groundout, then the next batter
Spencer Marcus had a base hit cutting the deficit to 5-3. Two batters later,
Hector Carrillo would knock in the third run of the inning on a base hit. From there the bats had already done enough damage to fluster Beaver pitcher Jack Partington. With the bases loaded he hit Vasquez to tie it, and walked
Drake Angeron to score Carrillo to walk-off for the 6-5 win.Â
