Conq Offense Struggles in Losses

(Dodge City, KS) -- The Dodge City Community College Softball team has struggled offensively of recent times, leading to the sweep on Saturday against Colby Community College and has been a big part of the current six-game losing streak. In game one against the Trojans, DC3 was able to stay in the game due to the fantastic pitching performance from Allie Hufford losing 3-0, but in the second game, the pitchers for the Conqs were not able to keep it close as they lost 15-2 in five innings.

In game one the pitching from both teams was dominant. Starting for the Conqs was Jessica Espinoza who pitched two innings and gave up three first-inning runs. That would be the only offense in the game for either team. Hufford replaced Espinoza after two innings and allowed just one hit in her five innings. She allowed no other baserunners, and also struck out six batters. Unfortunately, the Conqs offense was shut down by the pitcher for the Trojans. Mahealani Haegele threw a complete game, giving up no runs, walking two, giving up just four hits, and striking out eight.

In game two, the Conquistador offense was not much better, scoring two runs this time. It did start well for them, however, as they scored two runs right off the bat in the bottom of the first inning. Gianna Browdy knocked two runs in on a base hit. From there the Conqs bats were shut down this time by Whisper Doliwa who allowed the two runs in the first but pitched a complete five-inning game, giving up seven hits, one earned run, and walked two. Hufford started in the circle for the Conqs in this game, and kept them in the game through the first four innings, allowing one earned run on five hits. It was in the fifth inning where everything fell apart. The Conqs went through three pitchers in the inning, combining to give up twelve runs, on nine hits to contribute to losing 15-2.

The Conqs have a few days to regroup and will play on Wednesday at home against Northwest Kansas Technical College. Those games will start at 1:00 p.m.
