(El Dorado, KS) -- The bats were able to fight and keep up in game one before losing in the bottom of the seventh on a walk-off home run 17-15 but they were beaten in five innings 12-2 in game two. The Conq pitchers struggled for the second straight day. After giving up twenty-nine runs in the two games against Seward on Wednesday, they again allowed twenty-nine runs in the two games against Butler Community College on Thursday. Butler increased their winning streak over the Conqs to twenty-seven games with the wins.
In game one the scoring was plentiful, and it started early with the Conqs scoring two in the first two innings on a single by
Lexy Perez, and a ground out by
Ericka Calderon. The Grizzlies would do a lot of damage in the second, however as they would score six runs to take a 7-2 lead into the third. The Conquistadors would answer big with a seven-run third inning. Perez would start off the scoring by blasting a two-run home run. Samantha Montana would knock in a run and then proceed to score two batters later on an error. Calderon and Perez also knocked in a run of their own. Due to the big inning, the Conqs would go into the 5
thwith an 8-7 lead, and they would expand on it here as an error and a
Karissa Avila single would allow for three runs and a 12-8 lead. In the sixth Butler would cut into the deficit by scoring two runs. Leading 12-10, the Conqs got three much needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Avila knocked in two on a double, and
Haley Bass would score two more on a base hit. Unfortunately, those runs turned out to not be insurance runs and the Grizzlies would come all the way back to tie it before Anna Williams connected on a two-run home run to give them seven runs in the inning and end the game with the Conqs falling 17-15.
Karissa Avila and
Lexy Perez both had monster game ones, each going 4-5 with four runs batted in. Avila had two doubles, meanwhile, Perez had a double, and a home run.
Unfortunately for the Conquistadors, in game two they could not replicate the hitting of the first game and were outpaced early and shut down by Olivia DePew of the Grizzlies. She allowed just one earned run in her four innings in the game.
Gianna Browdy had both RBI's in game two.
The Conqs will have a day off on Friday, before welcoming Colby Community College to Legends Park for a home doubleheader on Saturday.
