Box Score Great Bend, KS -- The Conq Women were not able to overcome Barton in a game that they started slowly and made a late push in the fourth, before ultimately falling 73-61.
The game started poorly for the Conquistadors as they were in a 5-0 hole early on. It did not get much better for the Conqs throughout the first quarter as they were down 13-4 with 3:54 to go in the quarter. At the end of the first Dodge City was already fighting an uphill battle, down 17-8.
The second quarter did not start much better as Barton was able to get off to a 6-0 run to get out to a fifteen-point lead. At 6:23
Ashia Pool got something going for Dodge City as she got the hoop and the harm on a layup. Unfortunately, she was not able to convert on the free throw. On the next offensive possession,
Ashley Nelson was able to hit a running floater in the lane to cut the lead down to 11. The ensuing possession for the Cougars led to a turnover. Off the turnover, Martin was again able to hit a running floater in the lane to cap off a 6-0 run leading to a timeout for Barton. Coming out of the timeout Barton had the lead at 25-16. Neither team was able to score for two minutes until Barton hit a layup to stall any momentum that the Conqs had. DC3 was outscored 6-4 the remainder of the 2
nd quarter to go into halftime trailing 31-20.
The Conquistadors started the 2
nd half off start with
Haleigh Hill drilling a 3 pointer but it was answered immediately on the other end by the Cougars. Barton was able to go on a 6-0 run to give them their biggest lead of the game at 40-25. Dodge City finally scored to end the run. That did not stop Barton, however, as moments later they would convert a traditional 3-point play to give them a sixteen-point lead. A couple of minutes later the Cougars, again would go on a 6-0 run, this time to expand their lead to 20 at 49-29. The Conqs were able to counter with a 5-0 run of their own. The last couple minutes of the third were back and forth until there were 7 seconds left.
Ashia Pool was whistled for a foul and was also called for a technical foul. Barton was able to convert on all three of four free throws to expand the lead to 19 going into the fourth quarter.
DC3 would score first in the fourth but then Barton would go on a 5-0 run to give them a big lead at 63-39. This would lead to a timeout by Dodge City. Coming out of the timeout DC3 was able to go on a 10-2 run to cut the lead down to 16. Dodge City would have one more good run in them as they were able to cut the lead to 11 but the game would end shortly after with a final of 73-61.
The Conqs were led in scoring by
Ashley Nelson with 11, and
Fredrionna Adams with 10.
Kaylee Dale led the team in rebounding with 7.
The Conquistadors fell to 13-12 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
