Conquistadors Split In First Day of CONQ Classic

(Dodge City, KS) - CONQ Classic Day 1 Recap

Day 1 of the CONQ Classic say four full college basketball games at the Student Activity Center kicking off at 2PM in the afternoon. Oklahoma Wesleyan took on Redlands Community College in which Redlands controlled most of all the game and won by a wide margin. The final score of the game is unknown to us because we were busy cleaning up the remains of 10 gallons of water from a spilled cooler. Game 2 saw Seminole State (OK) take on On Point Prep Academy (OK). Seminole State controlled all of this game as well taking the contest by a score of 106-66. 

The Conquistador Women had the toughest challenge of the weekend facing #8 ranked Midland College (TX) in game 3 of the CONQ Classic. The Conqs manaaged to start very strong beyond the 3 point line and on defense holding Midland to just 12 points in the first quarter (18-12). The second quarter saw Midland outscore the Conqs 14-11 but the Conqs managed to hold on to the lead heading into the break 29-26. The second half however was a different story for both teams. The Conqs went 0-12 from beyond the 3 point line while Midland shot 5-9 (55.6%) from 3. Midland outscored the Conqs in both final quarters, 25-11 in the 3rd and 27-7 in the 4th. Final score of the contest went to #8 Midland 78-47 over the Conqs who are now 3-1 on the season heading into Saturday's matchup against Oklahoma Wesleyan at 4PM.

The Conquistador Men faced the Bethel Threshers JV squad in the final game of day one. The Conqs dominated from the opening tip. The Conqs managed to get every person dressed for the game in to get minutes and points. No player had less than 9 minutes of playing time and every one scored in the contest. Coach Steve Tucker made good use of his bench with no Conq getting more than 19 minutes of playing time (Akin Newton). The Conqs lead by 28 at the half and outscored the Threshers by 20 in the second half making the final score 111-63 in favor of the Conqs. The Conq Men move to 4-0 on the season ahead of Saturday's match up against a tough and fast On Point Academy at 6PM.
