Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - Scoring 24 points off turnovers and getting 24 points from freshman
Allie Baker, the Conquistadors were able to come from behind and defeat Barton Community College on Saturday afternoon, 55-51.
Baker's 24 points sets a new career-high as well as led all scorers in the game. Dodge City was not able to get any other scorers in double figures, but
Kaylee Dale was able to pull down nine boards while Baker grabbed eight rebounds.Â
Dodge City came out hot in the first quarter, quickly grabbing a 9-0 lead forcing Barton to call their first timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Conqs continued to add to their lead and just over two minutes later forced the Cougars to call their second timeout as they extended their lead to 13-2. Late in the quarter, the Cougars found their stride and finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to two, 13-11.Â
Again in the second quarter, the Conqs came out strong quickly pushing the lead back to 10 before the Cougars were able to make another run and cut the lead to one with 50 seconds left in the half. With time winding down in the half, Baker was able to connect with six seconds left to head into the locker room leading, 28-24.
Unlike the first two quarters, Dodge City came out very slow in the third quarter, not scoring their first basket until Baker hit another three on a pass from
Kaylee Dale with 2:10 to play in the quarter after Barton had grabbed a nine point lead. After the Cougars got their lead back to nine,
Allie Baker hit another shot from beyond the arc to cut the lead to six heading into the final quarter.Â
The fourth quarter is where the battle began as Barton hovered around a five point lead until a layup by Baker cut the lead to one with 3:26 to play. On the very next possession,
Rylee Burris missed a layup but hustled to get her own rebound and later in the possession knocked down a huge three to give the Conqs a two point lead with 2:12 to play. Dodge City was able to make their free throws late in the game and held on to knock off Barton, 55-51.
The Conqs move to 10-14 on the year and 7-14 in KJCCC play. They will be in action again on Wednesday as they travel to Cowley College at 5:30 p.m. Cowley won the first matchup of the season, 65-53.
