Box Score 2 DODGE CITY, Kan. - In Dodge City's first home soccer games of the year, the Conquistador women's soccer team tied Barton Community College, 0-0, while the men were given their first loss of the year, 1-0 on Wednesday night.
The women started the night off with a strong defensive showing, shutting out the Cougars. The Conqs were unable to scratch across a goal of their own. After two ten-minute overtime periods, both teams remained scoreless and the game ended in a tie, 0-0.
By the end of both overtimes,
Courtney Turner collected a game-high nine saves.Â
"This was not the result we wanted," head coach
Steward Bortey said. "I'm very proud of my girls for fighting. I am very proud of these ladies. It's a great day to be a Conquistador."
In game two of the night, Barton was able to hold the Conquistadors to just one shot in the first half.Â
Barton was able to score the first and only goal of the night on a goal in the 30th minute of the first half after a free-kick from Benjamin Zamora was headed in by Victor Gonazlez.
In the second half, the Conqs out shot the Cougars, 5-3 and almost tied the game up late in the second half on a header by
Abel Chevelon that went off the crossbar and was cleared out of the area by the Cougars.
The women are now 2-3-1 on the year and will be in action on Sept. 9 as they travel to Cloud County at 2 p.m. The men are now 2-1-2 and will also be in action at Cloud County on Sept. 9 at 4 p.m.
