Box Score DODGE CITY, Kan. - After winning seven straight matches, the Dodge City volleyball team fell to Barton in four sets on Wednesday by scores of 23-25, 25-21, 20-25 and 19-25.
Jaylen Pegues led the Conqs with another double-double, collecting 14 digs and 10 kills, while
Kate Warren was able to add 11 kills.
Gabriella Valdez also had a double-double, with 34 assists and 10 digs.
Raquel Valdez led defensively with three solo blocks and four block assists.
The first set was tied at nine until a 5-0 run by Barton gave them a 14-9 lead. The Cougars eventually pushed their lead to 10 points, before an 8-0 run by the Conqs brough the game back to 21-19. The Conqs were able to get the game within one, but a kill by Laine Conceicao ended the set, giving Barton a 1-0 lead.
Dodge City was able to take a 3-2 lead in set two and never looked back. The Conqs extended their lead to 10-4 forcing Barton to call their first timeout. Barton did not go away, eventually cutting the lead to 21-20. A kill by
Kate Warren pushed the lead back to 23-20 as Barton called its second second timeout. Coming out of the timeout, a service error by Barton and a kill from
Rachel Slattery ended the second set, giving Dodge City a 25-21 win.
Set three was a battle, as there were four lead changes. Dodge City was able to grab a slight lead, 17-14, but the Cougars fired right back, tying the game at 19 before an attacking error by DC3 gave the lead back to Barton. The Cougars finished the game on a 4-1 run, winning set three, 25-20.
Set four was Barton's from the beginning as they took an early 8-4 lead forcing DC3 to call a timeout. Dodge City used their second timeout after Barton was able to extend their lead to 16-9 late in the fourth set. Showing some fight, the Conqs were able to cut the lead to 18-15, but the Cougars quickly fired back, eventually winning set four 25-19 and the match, 3-1.
The Conqs are now 15-8 on the year and will be in action again on Friday as they take on Colby Community College at 6:30 p.m., inside the Student Activity Center.
