Conqs Sweep Allen County to Begin Season

Box Score IOLA, Kan. – The Conquistador volleyball team started off the 2017 season with a bang, sweeping Allen County Community College by scores of, 25-9, 25-18 and 25-13 on Tuesday night.
 
"It felt good to start the season off with a win and a sweep," head coach Kamri Nehls said. "We played very well at times but there is definitely room for improvement. Overall, I'm proud of their performance and we're ready to get back to work for this weekend's tournament."
 
Stephanie Garcia led the Conquistadors in digs with 16 while Rachel Slattery led with seven kills. Slattery also collected two solo blocks and four assists. Both Raquel Valdez and Sabrina Lowe collected six kills and Jedda Alcee had a team-high 13 assists. Lowe also collected four aces in the game.
 
In set one, the Conqs were able to jump out to an early 7-2 lead before the Red Devils called their first timeout of the set. Following the first timeout, the Conqs went on another 7-2 run, forcing Allen County to call its second timeout.
 
Coming out of the timeout, the Conqs continued to play well, extending the lead to 18-4 before the Red Devils were able to end the run. A kill by the Conqs and a hitting error by the Red Devils ended set one, giving Dodge City the 25-9 win.
 
Allen County jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in set two, but a service ace by the Red Devils got the Conqs going, tying the game at seven. After scoring three straight points, Allen County was forced to call its first timeout of the set with Dodge City leading, 10-7.
 
After extending the lead to 16-10, the Red Devils cut the lead to 17-15 before the Conquistadors were able to get the win in set two, 25-18.
 
To start set three, the Conqs went on a 5-0 run, forcing Allen County to call a timeout. The Red Devils were able to cut the lead to 5-2, but DC3 then went on an 11-3 to make the score 16-5. Again, Allen County started a comeback, cutting the lead to 16-8, but the Conqs were able to finish off the sweep, winning the third set, 25-13.
 
The Conqs are now 1-0 will be in action again on Friday as they begin a tournament in Lamar, Colo. The team's first game will be at 10 a.m. against Otero Junior College and the second game will be at 4 p.m., against Trinidad State Junior College.
