DODGE CITY, Kan. - Five errors by the Dodge City Community College baseball team led to seven unearned runs as Coffeyville Community College would come away with a 12-6 victory at Cavalier Field in Dodge City, Kansas on Saturday, May 6th.
DC3 falls to 37-17-1 overall with the loss while the Red Ravens improved to 26-29 overall. The best-of-three series is now tied at one game each after Dodge City took a 4-3, 11-inning win last night.
Things would start out in favor of the Conquistadors, as DC3 would push across two runs in the bottom of the first after collecting four hits and taking advantage of a CCC error.
Dodge City would extend their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second as
Isaak Snyder would get on base following a throwing error by the Coffeyville shortstop before
Robert Perea would clear the scoreboard in left field with a towering home run.
Cade Engle would keep things going with a one out single before coming around to score on a
Talon Schaller sacrifice fly to make the score 5-0 after two innings of play.
The Red Ravens managed to break through in the top of the fourth as the first two Coffeyville batters reached base en route to scoring five runs (all unearned) on three hits and an error as all five runs came with two outs.
DC3 would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Snyder would come to the plate with the bases loaded and break up a potential double-play by beating the throw to first to score a run and give the Conquistadors a 6-5 lead.
Coffeyville would take the lead for good in the top of the seventh as two consecutive errors to start the inning would tie the game at six and put a runner on second with no outs. A sacrifice fly would give the Red Ravens a 7-6 lead before a fly out and a base runner thrown out trying to steal second would end the threat.
Dodge City would appear to have a rally going in the bottom of the seventh with Schaller hitting a one out single and
Richard Fullerton getting aboard with a two-out hit-by-pitch, but Snyder would end up with a fly out to right field on an extraordinary diving snag by the Red Raven right fielder that would have otherwise scored two runs.
CCC would load the bases with one out in the eighth while clinging onto their 7-6 lead when the Conquistadors would make a pitching change go awry as nine-hole hitter Damon Jorgensen would clear the bases with a grand slam to left field and give Coffeyville a commanding 11-6 lead. The Red Ravens would add one more run on a wild pitch to head into the bottom of the eighth with a 12-6 lead.
DC3 would strand a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth and then see a lead off double in the bottom of the ninth go wasted as Coffeyville slammed the door shut to force a winner-take-all game three on Sunday.
After picking up the win last night,
J.T. Mossberg (3-1) would take the loss after throwing one and a third innings and giving up five runs on three hits.
Cole Brandon took the no-decision after allowing five unearned runs in six innings on four hits and striking out seven while
Jeremy Hidalgo would throw 0.2 innings and gave up two runs on three hits before
Eric Lindsay would throw a scoreless ninth inning.
The top five batters in the Dodge City order would all collect two hits in the game with
Jake Pederson going two-for-three at the plate with one walk and two runs scored. Schaller had two hits to go along with two runs batted in while Engle,
Brayden Cook, and
Dauson Tate were the other DC3 players with two hits.
Game three between the Conquistadors and Red Ravens will take place tomorrow at Cavalier Field at 1 p.m. with the winner moving on to the Central District Tournament in Wichita, Kansas next week.
