DODGE CITY, Kan. - A 13-run sixth inning that saw the Dodge City Community College baseball team send 14 batters to the plate propelled the Conquistadors to a 19-3 win over Coffeyville Community College at Cavalier Field on Sunday, May 7th.
DC3 moves on to next week's NJCAA Region VI Central District Tournament round while improving to 38-17-1 as the Red Ravens see their season end at 26-30.
A stiff wind blowing out at the ballpark would allow for CCC to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after cleanup hitter Jose Carrasquillo would launch a two-run home run to left field. Dodge City would match the Red Ravens two runs in the first with
Talon Schaller driving home
Brayden Cook on an RBI groundout and
Richard Fullerton driving in
Jake Pederson.
DC3's first lead of the game would come at 3-2 in the bottom of the seocnd as
Cade Engle would hit a one out single and come around to score following hit and run that would move him from first to third and a wild pitch to score the go-ahead run. Cook would come around to score on the second wild pitch of the inning following a Coffeyville pitching change and Schaller would collect his second RBI of the game with another groundout to make the score 5-2 after two.
The Red Ravens would score their final run of the game in the top of the third after stringing together a one-out single and double to cut the lead to 5-3, but end the inning on the base paths after
Tommy Knowlton's second successful pick off of the inning.
Engle would drive home
Robert Perea in the bottom of the third to once again match Coffeyville run-for-run in an inning and put the Dodge City lead back at three runs.
Two runners would be stranded on the base paths by CCC in the top of the fourth before Dodge City would strand a pair of their own and squander a prime opportunity to extend their lead with some insurance runs.
The fifth inning would have both Dodge City and Coffeyville go down in order to send things to the sixth where the Red Ravens would draw only a one-out walk.
DC3's 13-run sixth inning scoring explosion would see the game broke open with a
Dauson Tate two-RBI double dot score Schaller and
Jake Pederson to make the score 8-3 in favor of DC3 with the big blows yet to come.
Richard Fullerton would reach on a fielding error and pinch-hitter Isaak Snyder would get on with a fielder's choice to load the bases with just one out. Perea would drive in a run by drawing a walk before a Bergdall single would keep the scoring going to make the score 10-3.
Engle ensured that the game would end early with a bases-clearing grand slam that was sent well over the left field wall as Schaller would come up three batters later and match the massive home run over the score board with a three-run homer of his own. For good measure following a Tate hit-by-pitch, Fullerton would cap off the inning with a two-run home run to give DC3 three runs in the inning and score more runs in the sixth than they have in 47 of their games this season.
Tommy Knowlton (6-2) would take the win by going four innings and allowing just three runs on six hits and striking out two before
Jonny Chavez would pitch three hitless innings and strike out four to earn his first save of the season.
Engle and Schaller would lead all players with five runs batted in each wihle combining for four hits and two home runs. Cook would go three-for-five with three runs scored and Fullerton would drive in three.
The Central District Tournament gets underway on Friday, May 12th with the No. 5 seed Dodge City Community College baseball team taking on No. 4 Seed Johnson County Community College at 7 p.m. from Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The eight-team, double-elimination tournament will run through Monday, May 16th.
Notes: Multiple Conquistadors are within striking distance of top-10 records this season including:
Cade Engle now has scored 61 runs this season, five short of the single-season record set by Johnny Balsamo in 2015. Engle currently is third behind Balsamo and Osmar Castillo (62, 2000).
Engle is also tied for sixth-most hits in a single season with Bo Blanton (1999) and Luke Slentz (2011) at 72.
Talon Schaller had previously set the single-season home run record this season and extended the record to 17 with his home run today. With 18 career home runs, Schaller is tied for third-most in a career at DC3 with Leno Ramirez (2014-15) and Jason Berry (1998-99).
Schaller's five RBI on Sunday puts him at 75 on the season, just two short of the single-season record set by Cody Voelker in 2012. With 85 career RBI, Schaller is seventh all-time at DC3.
Cole Brandon has 66 strikeouts this season, fourth-most in a single season. The sophomore needs two to pass
Jay Rawlins (2016) with Russell Mithlo (86, 2015) and Lucas Crabb (100, 2015) unlikely to be caught this year.
Brandon has 109 strikeouts in his career, third-most in DC3 history behind only Crabb (121, 2014-15) and Mithlo (122, 2014-15).
