DODGE CITY, Kan. - Overcoming a three-run first-inning deficit, the Dodge City Community College baseball team used a ninth-inning error and wild pitch to walk off with a 4-3 win over Lamar Community College at Cavalier Field in Dodge City on Thursday, April 6th.
The Conquistadors have now won six of their past seven games to improve to 23-9-1 overall while the Lopes fall to 29-10 overall and just 8-5 away from their home field.
Lamar would put up all of their scoring in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits and one Dodge City to put DC3 in an early hole.
Isaak Snyder would get on with a one-out double to right field and move to third on a groundout by
Jake Pederson, but the Conquistadors would come up empty with a strikeout to end the inning. DC3 would work around two singles by LCC in the top of the second before squandering a leadoff single by
Dauson Tate to remain scoreless as Lamar starting pitcher Nick Rohacek would keep Dodge City in check.
The Conquistadors would break through in the bottom of the third with
Cade Engle drawing a two-out walk before Snyder would execute a hit and run to move Engle to third on a single through the right side of the infield. Pederson would then bring Dodge City's first run of the game with a second-consecutive single through the right side to make the score 3-1 in favor of LCC.
Pitching staffs would settle in until the bottom of the sixth as Pederson would collect his second hit of the day on a leadoff solo home-run to draw the Conquistadors within a single run at 3-2 before
Talon Schaller would double to put a runner on second and no outs. A flyout would bring
Gavin Gifford to the plate where the freshman would deliver with an RBI single to knot the game up and give DC3 new life heading into the final three innings of play.
Lamar would strand a single runner in the top of the seventh before DC3 found themselves stranding a pair of runners as neither team could come up with a much-needed timely hit. A scoreless eighth-inning would send things to the top of the ninth where Dodge City would bring in
Jeremy Hidalgo, which saw the Lopes put runners on the corners with one-out and the go-ahead run just 90-feet away from scoring. Hidalgo would manage to escape the jam by picking off the runner at first before ending the inning on a foul-out to first-base to keep the game tied at three.
Engle would collect a one-out single before advancing to third on consecutive wild pitches to give themselves a shot to walk off with a win. A Snyder fielder's choice would see Engle thrown out at home to keep the game tied with two-outs. Pederson would hit a second-consecutive fielder's choice to give Lamar a chance to send the game to extra-innings but a throwing error by the shortstop would put put runners on second and third. Having seen two wild pitches already in the inning, DC3 would take full advantage yet a third wild pitch as Snyder would race down the line to score the game-winning run in grand fashion.
Hidalgo would come away as the pitcher of record, improving his record to 1-1 on the season after throwing one scoreless inning on two hits.
