DC3 Baseball With Rare Tie vs. Colorado Northwestern

DODGE CITY, Kan. - With the game tied at five all at the end of seven innings, the Dodge City Community College baseball team unsuccessfully tried to wait out the weather before having their game end in a tie against Colorado Northwestern Community College at Cavalier Field in Dodge City on Friday, March 24th.

Game two was subsequently canceled and will not be made up, leaving the Conquistadors with an overall record of 17-8-1 while the Spartans are now 9-17-1.

CNCC got of to a quick start in the top of the first, taking advantage of a leadoff hit batter before a Taylor Wright double down the right field line would drive in the run from first to make the score 1-0 before an out would be recorded. Following a strikeout, the Spartans would use an error to score their second run of the before a wild pitch would move their runner into scoring position, allowing the second double of the inning down the right field line would make the score 3-0. Dodge City would escape the rest of the inning without any more damage done, but would go down in order in the bottom half of the inning. Colorado Northwestern would add a single run in the top of the second on a leadoff single by Keaton Turner who would come around to score on a Logan green sacrifice fly.

DC3 would cut into the Spartan lead in the bottom of the second as Dauson Tate would hit a one-out single to shortstop, allowing for Gavin Gifford to send the first pitch he saw over the right field fence on an absolute no-doubt home run and make the score 4-2. Both CNCC and DC3 would leave a pair of runners on base in the third to leave the game at a two-run deficit before starting DC3 pitcher Tommy Knowlton would shut down the Spartans in order in the fourth. Tate would leadoff the inning with his second hit of the game using a double down the right field line, but would be stranded at third with three consecutive outs and a prime opportunity wasted by the Conquistadors.

Colorado Northwestern would be held to just one hit in the fifth, as no damage would be done before Dodge City would take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning. Cade Engle and Brayden Cook would collect back-to-back one out singles followed by Jake Pederson who sent a rocket-shot down the right field line over the fence for a three-run home-run to give DC3 a 5-4 lead. J.T. Mossberg would relieve Knowlton in to start the sixth inning, working around a one-out walk to keep the Conquistadors up one. Dodge City would end the sixth inning on the base paths as two of the three outs in the inning would come on base runners caught stealing and DC3 unable to add any insurance runs.

A leadoff single and error trying to throw out the runner at second would allow for a groundout to move the runner to third before an RBI groundout to shortstop would tie the game at five. After a Cook one-out walk, Pederson would hit into a fielder's choice and steal second to put a runner on second for the Conquistadors with two outs needing just a single run to come away walk-off winners. Richard Fullerton would hit a single to advance Pederson to third, but the Spartans would get out of the jam and send the game to extra innings.

Before extra-innings could start, the umpires called both managers over to discuss the weather situation as a rain system had moved in around the fourth inning with a decision made to try and wait out the system. Following a 30 minute delay, both managers decided to end the game in a tie, to eliminate the potential for any injuries caused by the slick weather.

Dodge City would out hit CNCC 10-6 in the game, but would be guilty of three errors leading to two unearned runs. Pederson, Tate and Gifford would all collect two hits in the game with Pederson recording three RBI and Gifford two. Despite the no-decision Knowlton would go five innings and give up four runs on five hits and strike out four. Mossberg and Harvey each threw one inning, combining for two strikeouts.

DC3 and Colorado Northwestern are scheduled to play a doubleheader tomorrow, with the weather forecast calling for more ideal playing conditions. A decision will be made in the morning on the length of the two-game set (two seven-inning games, two nine-inning games, or one seven-inning game followed by one-nine inning game).
