Baseball Walks Off, Hangs On vs. Colorado Northwestern

DODGE CITY, Kan. - A Talon Schaller walk-off grand slam gave the Dodge City Community College baseball team a 9-5 win in game one before hanging on to beat Colorado Northwestern Community College to sweep the day at Cavalier Field in Dodge City on Saturday, March 25th.

DC3 is now 19-8-1 on the season while the Spartans drop to 9-19-1 overall after yesterday's tie and today's sweep by the Conquistadors.

Dodge City would do a majority of their work in the bottom of the first inning as consecutive walks to start the game would put two runners on followed by a Jake Pederson hit by pitch to load the bases. Schaller would then be walked to drive in the first run of the game as Dauson Tate would keep the carousel going with an RBI single to left field. A Gavin Gifford sacrifice fly put DC3 up 3-0 before Richard Fullerton capped off the scoring inning with an RBI fielder's choice.

CNCC scored a single unearned run in the top of the second before an inning-ending double play ended the threat and keep the Dodge City lead at 4-1. Starting pitcher's would get into a groove over the next inning and a half to keep things where they were heading to the top of the fourth when Colorado Northwestern would take advantage of a DC3 fielding error to cut the lead to 4-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth. Dodge City would once again be held scoreless in the bottom of the fourth to send things to the top of the fifth, where starting pitcher Joe Buckendorf would strike out two with a groundout in between to strand a runner on third.

DC3's first two batters of the bottom of the frame would get on base with an Engle hit-by-pitch followed by Cook single on a hit and run to advance Engle to third before a Pederson RBI fielder's choice made the game 5-2. Following a Spartan pitching change, Dodge City would see their next three batters go down in order. CNCC plated a single run in the top of the sixth to put the Dodge City lead back at 5-3 where things would remain until the top of the ninth. The Spartans would tie the game on two runs using three hits and an error in the top of the ninth, but miss out on an opportunity to take their first lead of the game by leaving the bases loaded. DC3 saw their lead off pinch-hitter Sylman Pando strike out before an Engle walk and Cook single would put runners on the corners and CNCC choosing to intentionally walk Pederson. Schaller would then end things with by turning on a pitch to send the ball well over the left field wall and end things.

Cook and Schaller provided the majority of the offense in game one, with Shcaller accounting for five RBI's while Cook went three-for-four at the plate. Tate would go two-for-three with a pair of singles.

Game two would not have as much offensive flair, as starting pitcher Cole Brandon would shut down the Spartans for a majority of the game. With the game still scoreless in the bottom of the third, a Robert Perea one-out single and stolen base saw Cole Bergdall move Perea over to third on a groundout and allow Cook to single home the DC3 catcher. Things would stay at 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Perea would again reach base on a one-out walk and move to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Bergdall would double the score at 2-0 with a double to left field before coming around to score on a Cook single up the middle. The Conquistadors would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 4-0 and turn the ball over the bullpen. Colorado Northwestern would get a run back in the top of the eighth using a one-out single followed by an RBI double before a 4-6-3 double play ended the inning. DC3 would go scoreless in the top of the ninth before a solo home-run would make the score 4-2 with one out in the top of the ninth. Pitcher Jeremy Hidalgo would get a groundout for out number two Dalton Harvey would come in and end the game with a strikeout.

Perea would end the game oficially two-for-two at the plate while scoring three runs as Cook would go three-for-four with two RBI's. Brandon would pick up the win, throwing 7.1 innings of work and striking out seven.

More non-conference home action is in store for DC3 on Wednesday, March 29th when the Conquistadors host Frank Phillips Community College for a doubleheader at Cavalier Field.
