ROSWELL, New Mexico - Using a total of 12 runs over the final three innings of play, the Dodge City Community College baseball team broke out for a 14-6 victory in the fourth and final game of a four-game series against New Mexico Military Institute at the NMMI Ballpark in Roswell, New Mexico on Sunday, February 26th.
DC3 avoids being swept by the Broncos to improve to 4-4 overall on the season while NMMI falls to 9-7 overall.
The Conquistadors would snag one run to open the game in the top of the first as a
Dauson Tate single would drive home
Brayden Cook. New Mexico Military would respond with a run of their own on two hits, but would leave the bases full with a prime opportunity to take an early lead gone by the wayside. A Cook sacrifice fly to bring home
Robert Perea would be all that Dodge City could muster in the second to regain the lead briefly as the Broncos would use a passed ball and RBI double to plate two in their half of the second to take a 3-2 lead. The score would remain the same until the top of the fifth when DC3 would break out by putting their first two batters on base, allowing for
Talon Schaller to launch a three-run home run to put the Conquistadors up for good. Following a pop out and pitching change, DC3 would tack on two more runs to score five in the fifth and take a 7-3 lead. Starting pitcher
Joe Buckendorf would allow just a single run to the Broncos in the bottom of the fifth before Dodge City would respond with two runs on two hits and one error to pad their lead to 9-4. NMMI managed a pair of runs in the sixth to match the DC3 scoring output before five insurance runs on five hits would put the Conquistadors up 14-6 and allow Buckendorf and
Jeremy Hidalgo to shut down the Broncos to end the game.
Buckendorf would throw 6.2 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out four. Hidalgo would face just one batter, collecting the final out of the ballgame. Tate and Schaller would each drive in four runs in the game as Tate would go a perfect three-for-three at the plate while Cook drove in three in addition to scoring a pair of runs.
The weekend road trip concludes tomorrow afternoon when Dodge City meets up with the Wayland Baptist JV team for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. DC3 is in the midst of a 12-game road swing with 14 of their first 16 games of the year coming away from Cavalier Field.
