Baseball Back On Track With Sweep Of Wayland Baptist JV

PLAINVIEW, Texas - Picking up a much needed win yesterday over New Mexico Military Institute, the Dodge City Community College baseball team carried over the momentum to today for a 10-6 and 10-5 win over the Wayland Baptist JV team on Monday, February 27th.

DC3 is now 6-4 overall and winners of three straight games.

In game one, the Conquistadors would do a majority of their damage in the top of the second by putting up six runs before adding a pair of runs in both the fifth and six innings. Dodge City would threaten the Pioneers by loading the bases two outs before an inning-ending strikeout would leave DC3 empty. A 1-2-3 inning to end the first would allow the Conquistadors to learn from their mistake, putting on three consecutive batters with one out before an Eric Reid double would clear the bases. Following a groundout and hit by pitch to put two runners on with two outs, Gavin Gifford would deliver the second big blow of the evening by launching a three-run home-run to put Dodge City up 6-0. DC3 would carry their six run lead into the bottom of the fourth inning before WBU JV would finally get on the board by using a leadoff double and failed pickoff attempt to get a sacrifice fly and push a run across. Gifford would go yard for a second time to lead off the top of the fifth before Jonny Chavez would follow up with a home run of his own to to give Dodge City an 8-1 lead, which would be more than enough run support for starting pitcher Hayden Davey. Things would get interesting in the sixth as DC3 would put up two runs before Wayland Baptist would use a pinch-hit single and two walks to load the bases. A strikeout followed by another walk would keep the bases loaded and the score at 10-2 when the second pinch-hitter of the inning for the Pioneers would clear the bags with a grand-slam to cut the lead to 10-6. The seventh inning would not be nearly as wild, as both teams would be held in check, allowing for DC3 to take game one.

Davey would throw five complete innings to pick up his first win of the year, giving up just one run on three hits while fanning nine. Gifford's two home runs would be complimented with a total three hits in the game and six RBI's while Reid would drive in a total of three runs.

Using a similar scoring output in game two, DC3 would not as long to get on the board by putting up five runs in the first. Tallon Schaller and Jon Coss would each record two RBI hits before Reid would continue his big day with a two-run home run. After threatening in both the second and third innings but coming up empty, the Conquistadors would see their lead evaporate in the bottom of the third with Wayland Baptist JV putting up three runs on two hits to cut the lead to 5-3. The game would become tied in the fourth as the Pioneers would carry thier third-inning momentum over while taking advantage of an error. Dodge City would finally get things going again in the fifth when leadoff hitter Richard Fullerton would be hit by a pitch and Schaller would drive him home with a two-run shot over the outfield fence. WBU JV, would put one baserunner on in the fifth but could not get anything going offensively to leave the score at 5-3 in favor of DC3 with a chance to add to their lead. The opportunity would go wasted as DC3 would not be able to push across any runs in the sixth, but would make up for it by holding the Pioneers scoreless in their end of the sixth. Three insurance runs would be added by the Conquistadors in the seventh, allowing for Dodge City to come away with the five run victory.

Fullerton would be the big threat in game two, finishing two-for-three at the plate and scoring three runs while Schaller, Coss, and Reid all drove in three runs.

Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play starts on Saturday for DC3, when the Conquistadors will open up with a four-game series at Cloud County Community College. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
