DODGE CITY, Kan. - Sophomore
Alexus Johnson dropped in a game-high 23 points to move into sixth place on the career scoring charts as the Dodge City Community College women's basketball dropped a 92-47 home decision to Cowley College on Wednesday, February 15th.
DC3 is now 4-22 on the year and 4-18 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Tigers improved to 20-6 overall and 16-6 in the KJCCC while sweeping the season series from Dodge City.
Cowley would pressure Dodge City throughout the game, making their presence felt early on to jump out to a 9-1 lead just 2:31 into the contest. DC3's first field goal would come at the 4:55 mark in the first quarter on a
Denis Ortiz layup as Cowley would go on to shoot 56.5 percent (13-23) from the field in the first quarter and take advantage of nine Dodge City turnovers to lead 34-8 after 10 minutes of play.
Things would stay a lot more level in the second as the Conquistadors would go on a short 6-2 run midway through the quarter to cut into the Cowley lead. The Tigers would take their largest lead of the half at 50-17 with 2:47 left in the second quarter before the Conqs would end the half on a 5-0 run to put the score 50-22 at the half.
Cowley would take full control of the game in the third quarter by scoring the first 11 points of the second half before a pair of
Mariah Watkins free throws with 5:28 left in the third would finally end the run. Dodge City would never be able to build momentum in the third, as the Tigers would answer every DC3 bucket down the stretch and take a commanding 74-33 lead into the fourth.
Things would get slightly better in the fourth for the Conquistadors, scoring six of the first eight points in the quarter while seeing shots start to fall. Johnson would do the brunt of her scoring in the fourth, scoring nine of her 23 points down the stretch.
Cowley would finish 35 of 96 from the floor (36.5%) compared to 14 of 57 (24.6%) for DC3 as the Tigers would also hold a commanding 65-45 advantage on the glass. Dodge City would be guilty of 21 turnovers leading to 26 Cowley points while going a dismal 16 of 31 (51.6%) from the charity stripe.
With the 23 points, Johnson moved pass
Antania Newton (2014-16), Azaria Nave (2013-15), and Ronnie Mcglaughlin (2002-04) while also moving up to No. 4 all-time in career three-point field goals made with 106 treys.
Sada Smith would pull a career-high 16 rebounds and score six points while
Dakota Hoffman had seven points and eight rebounds. Cowley was led in scoring by Emilee Holloway with 14 points.
A KJCCC West-East clash awaits DC3, who will travel to Allen County on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off in Iola. The Red Devils dropped a 53-34 road decision to Independence on Wednesday evening.
