GREAT BEND, Kan. – Playing short-handed with only five available players, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team could not overcome a near 50 percent shooting night from host Barton Community College in a 100-55 road loss on Saturday, February 11th.
DC3 is now 4-21 overall and 4-17 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the host Lady Cougars improved to 14-11 overall and above .500 in the Jayhawk Conference at 11-10.
Things would get off to a slow start for DC3, as Barton would score the first eight points of the game before a
Denis Ortiz triple would finally get the Conquistadors on the board just over four minutes into the game. Another Ortiz three would cut the Lady Cougar lead to 14-10 with 1:34 left in the first quarter, but BCC would go on a 6-0 run to end the quarter and go up 20-10 at the end of one.
Tough sledding would be the story of the second quarter as Barton would jump out all over Dodge City to start the quarter and take a 36-13 lead midway through the second. The trend would continue for the remainder of the first half as DC3 would be outscored 25-5 in the second and trail by a score of 45-15 at intermission.
Points would be easier to come by for the Conquistadors in the second half, but playing short-handed would catch up with them as DC3 would be unable to cut into the lead any in the third despite scoring 20 points. Barton would use a 12-24 shooting performance in the third quarter to take a 79-35 lead into the final 10 minutes of action. With the damage done, DC3 would score another 20 points in the fourth and keep the pace with Barton, before falling by a final score of 100-55.
After shooting a dismal 15.8 percent (6-38) in the first half, Dodge City would go 13 of 35 (37.1%) in the second half from the floor to finish the game 19 of 73 from the field (26.0%). Barton would go an efficient 43.8 percent (35-80) from the field and outscore DC3 27-2 in second-chance points after winning the battle on the glass by a 74-28 total.
Ortiz would lead the Conqs with 19 points in the game and add two steals while
Sada Smith would pick up a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Alexus Johnson would score 12 points while
Mariah Watkins just missed double-figures by finishing with nine points. Barton was led by a game-high 20 points from Micaela Jellison.
The Wednesday-night February home-stand will continue for Dodge City next week, when the Conquistadors play host to Cowley Community College. The Lady Tigers were 73-61 home winners over Independence on Saturday afternoon.
