Box Score CONCORDIA, Kan. – After a very slow start by the Conquistadors, losing set one, 16-25, the Conqs then found their way, winning the next three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-22 on Wednesday night at Cloud County Community College.
Cloud County came out very strong in set one, taking an early 13-5 lead, forcing Dodge City to call their first timeout of the game. The Thunderbirds stayed hot coming out of the timeout, extending their lead to 17-7. The Conqs were then able to cut the lead to seven, at 21-14, but Cloud finished on a 4-2 run to win set one, 25-16.
Set two was a different story, as the Conqs jumped ahead early and eventually extended their lead to 13-7 before Cloud called their first timeout. After the timeout, Cloud cut the lead to 15-13, but a kill by
Gabriella Valdez and an attacking error by the T-Birds pushed the Conq lead back to 17-13. Dodge City extended the lead to 21-16 late in the set, and the Conqs scored the next four points, capped off by a block from
Rachel Slattery and
Gabriella Valdez to win set two, 25-16.
Dodge City scored the first three points of set three, but the T-Birds were able to get things going, tying the game at five early in the set. After Cloud took a 6-5 lead, the Conqs went on a 5-0 run to force Cloud to call their first timeout of the set. Cloud County then cut the lead to two, but the Conqs quickly extended the lead to seven, 21-14. The T-Birds were able to cut the lead to five late, but a kill by
Kate Warren and a block by
Raquel Valdez gave Dodge City a 25-18 win in set three.
Set four was a battle, but the Conquistadors never trailed throughout the set. After trading points early in the set, the Conqs finally were able to break away, taking a 14-10 lead as Cloud had to call a timeout. Cloud would not go away easily, keeping the lead at four for most of the set. The T-Birds cut the lead to one late, but a kill by
Raquel Valdez gave the Conqs a 25-22 win in set four.
The Conqs finish the regular season with a record of 19-14 and will be in action for the first round of postseason on Tuesday, Oct. 31 as they will travel to Hutchinson Community College at 6:30 p.m.
