Conqs Fall to Garden City in Five Sets

Box Score GARDEN CITY, Kan. – In a battle at Garden City Community College, the Conquistador volleyball team fell to the Lady Broncbusters in five sets by scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 7-15.
 
Garden City jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in set one, but five straight points by the Conqs tied the game at nine. With the game tied at 12, the Broncbusters went on a 4-1 run to take a three point lead, 16-13, forcing Dodge City to call their first timeout.
 
Coming out of the timeout, the Conqs tied the game at 16, and eventually took the lead 20-19. After a service ace and a timeout from Garden City, a kill by Jaylen Pegues forced Garden City to call their second timeout of the set, with the Conqs leading, 23-20. After the Broncbusters cut the lead to one, a kill by Raquel Valdez ended set one, giving Dodge City the 25-23 win.
 
Garden City took another early lead in set two, taking a 6-3 lead before the Conqs were able to tie the game at eight on a service ace from Gabriella Valdez. After Dodge City took a short lead, the Broncbusters quickly tied the game again at 12 before the Conqs extended their lead to 16-12 on an error from Garden City and a service ace from Jedda Alcee.
 
After taking a 19-14 lead, the Broncbusters scored four straight to cut the lead to one, 19-18. An error by the Conqs tied the game at 20, then a service ace by GCCC gave the Broncbusters a 21-20 lead forcing Dodge City to call a timeout. The Conqs were able to cut the lead to 24-23, but a kill from Garden City ended set two, giving the Broncbusters a 25-23 win.
 
Dodge City started with a lead in set three, jumping out to an early 6-3 lead. Later in the set, the Broncbusters were able to tie the game at 16, but a kill by Jaylen Pegues took the lead right back. Garden City then scored three straight points to take a 19-17 lead late in set three.
 
After extending their lead to 22-19, back-to-back errors by Garden City and a block and a kill from Raquel Valdez gave Dodge City a 23-22 lead. Again, the Conqs took a 24-23 lead in set three and a kill by Pegues ends the set, giving Dodge City a 25-23 win.
 
Just as in set three, the Conqs took a 6-3 lead early in set four. The Broncbusters were able to cut the lead to 8-7, but then pushed the lead to 10-7. Garden City was then able to tie the game at 10, before Dodge City took the lead right back on an error by the Broncbusters, 11-10.
 
With the score tied at 14, back-to-back errors by Garden City and a kill from Gabriella Valdez gave Dodge City a 17-14 lead. After extending the lead to 18-15, the Conqs extended their lead once more to 20-16. Garden City was not done yet, tying the game at 22 before a block assist by Garden City gave the Broncbusters a 23-22 lead. Garden City took the very next point to win set four, 25-22.
 
In set five, the Broncbusters took an early, 4-1 lead, pushing the lead to 8-4 before the teams switched sides. After the switch, Garden scored the next three points to extend their lead to 11-4. Garden City never looked back, wining set five, 15-7 and the match, 3-2.
 
The Conqs are now 16-12 on the year and will be in action again on Monday, Oct. 16, as they host Hutchinson Community College at 6:30 p.m., inside the Student Activity Center.
