INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - 21 points off turnovers would bail out poor free-throw shooting by the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team in an 83-70 road win at Independence Community College on Saturday, Jan. 7.
DC3 is now 11-4 overall and 8-3 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Pirates fall to 7-7 overall and 4-7 in the KJCCC.
Dodge City would open the game by hitting two treys to take an early 6-3 lead before Independence would go on a 13-0 run to take a 16-6 lead with 13:31 left in the first half. The Conquistadors would battle their way back to cut it to five at 20-15 with 11:08 remaining and tie things at 26 on a
Dreon Lewis jumper in the paint. Down the stretch would be close as DC3 would take a 34-32 lead into the locker room.
A quick start to the second half would allow Dodge City to take a seven point lead on a
Kourtney Ware triple and push their lead to 12 at 54-42 with 13:46 left in the game. Independence would fight their way back and cut the lead to 57-50 with 9:52 left in the game at the final media timeout of the game. A Shawntez Scroggins fast break layup would cap off a 10-0 run for the Pirates who would cut the lead to 59-58 with 7:50 left in the game before
Nick Noskowiak would hit back-to-back three's to push the Conquistador lead back to seven. After taking a 10 point lead with 3:21 remaining, Independence would close back to within five, but could get no closer as DC3 would find a way to a couple of needed free throws to pull away.
"Independence is an explosive team who can get it going, so this was a good win for us on the road" said head coach
Kyle Campbell in a post-game interview with
Damon Post. "I'm happy, and I told our guys that you cannot understate how hard it is to win on the road in the Jayhawk Conference."
Independence would out-rebound Dodge City 50-32, but the Conquistadors would shoot 53.8 percent (14-26) from the field in the second half to finish 27-59 (45.8%) in the game. The Pirates would score 34 points in the paint compared to 28 for Dodge City, but DC3 would outscore Independence 27-23 in bench points.
Sophomore
Harris Brown would lead all scorers with 29 points on 10-19 shooting while hitting five treys. Ware scored 18 points and pulled down six boards while Lewis and Noskowiak each had 10 points off the bench. Independence was led by 21 points from Dajon Streeter.
The first half of the 26-game KJCCC schedule concludes next week starting on Wednesday night at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas on Wednesday, Jan. 11th. Tip-off from the Greenhouse is set for 8 p.m.
