Cloud County Sweeps Season Series From Women's Basketball

Concordia, Kan. – With hopes of getting the back half of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference schedule off to a good start, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team would not be able to keep up with host Cloud County Community College in an 113-53 road loss in Concordia, Kansas on Wednesday, January 18th.

The Conquistadors are now 3-15 on the year and 3-11 in the KJCCC with 12 games left in the conference schedule. Cloud County improved to 13-4 overall and 10-4 in the Jayhawk Conference to keep pace for fourth place with Cowley College.

It would appear as though DC3 had finally shaken off their slow starts that have haunted them throughout the season, as Dodge City would score the first five points of the game and lead early on. The lead would be very short lived as the Thunderbirds would go on a 13-3 run over the next 3:21 to establish a 13-8 lead with 4:19 left in the first quarter and not allow the Conqs to get any closer than three points. CCCC would end the quarter on an 8-3 run to take a 21-13 lead heading into the second.

Foul trouble and second chance opportunities would do Dodge City in for most of the second quarter as the Conqs would hit just three shots from the field in the second period and see the fouls start to stack up. Cloud County would take full advantage of a struggling Conquistador offense, building their lead to 58-25 at the half by going 10-11 at the charity stripe in the quarter and outscoring DC3 10-1 on second chance points. Five Dodge City players would end the first half with at least two fouls.

The third quarter would be an extension of the second as Cloud County would stay streaky from the floor with Dodge City's struggles offensive struggles would continue. While building upon their lead, CCCC would score 20 of the first 24 points of the second half and keep their foot on the pedal, expanding their already large rebounding margin to 36-12 and 11-3 on the offensive glass. Dodge City would trail 92-32 at the end of three quarters.

With the damage already done, the Conqs would do what they could in the fourth, but it would make of little difference as the T'Birds would already have the game in hand and build on their lead a little more.

Dodge City would finish the game by going 17-51 from the floor (33.3%) and seven of 15 from beyond the arc (46.7%). Cloud County would finish where they started, shooting 57.5 percent (42 of 73) from the floor and going 23-27 (85.2%) from the free throw line. A rebounding margin of 46-17 in favor of the Thunderbirds in addition to 32 Cloud County points off of turnovers would play a big role in the game for CCCC to sweep the season series.

Freshman Baily Shelor would set a new career-high with 24 points by going eight of 14 from the field and five of six beyond the arc while Alexus Johnson had 10 points. No other Conquistador finished in double figures. Cloud County was led by 21 points from Erin Alexander who finished 10-12 from the floor.

Dodge City will have a chance to sweep the season series vs. Pratt on Saturday, January 21st when the Conqs host the Beavers at the Student Activities Center in Dodge City at 1 p.m. Earlier this season, DC3 took a 76-71 road win to give head coach Zach Loll his first win at Dodge City.
