DODGE CITY, Kan. – After digging themselves an early hole, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team could not overcome a hot-shooting Pratt Community College in a 75-56 home loss at the Student Activities Center in Dodge City on Saturday, January 21.
Continued struggles now leave the Conquistadors with an overall record of 3-16 and 3-12 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Beavers avoid dropping the season series to Dodge City to improve to 4-15 overall and 4-11 in the KJCCC.
Pratt would jump out to a 6-0 lead to start the game before a 7-0 run would allow Dodge City to take their only lead of the game at the 6:43 mark in the first quarter. The series of runs would continue as the Beavers responded with an 8-0 run before a 5-0 run cut the Pratt lead to 14-12 with 1:30 left in the quarter. Five points to end the quarter by Pratt would give the Beavers some breathing room at 19-12 heading into the second.
DC3 would keep Pratt within single digits and make a small run midway through the period to get within six at 27-21 with 5:07 left in the half, but three consecutive treys and a layup by Pratt would balloon the lead back out to 38-21 and put the Conqs in a 38-23 halftime hole.
Consistency would be maintained by the Beavers as for the third straight quarter Pratt would score 19 points and expand their lead to 23 points midway through the third. Another small 7-0 run would cut into the Beaver lead and give Dodge City some momentum, but Pratt would hit another timely three to maintain their edge and kill the momentum.
DC3 would have their highest scoring quarter come in the fourth, but it would not be enough as Pratt would answer nearly every bucket that Dodge City would hit to return the favor to the Conquistadors with a home-court loss.
The Conquistadors shot just 26.6 percent (17-64) from the field and were out-rebounded 45-39 in the contest, but would hold a 16-9 advantage in second chance points. Pratt made their living throughout on shooting beyond the arc, outscoring the Conqs by 18 from three and finishing 29-66 (43.9%) from the field.
Alexus Johnson led the Conquistadors with 11 points to move into 17
th place on the all-time scoring charts at DC3 while grabbing seven rebounds.
Taylor Nichols had 10 points off the bench and pulled in seven boards of her own while
Dasia Johnson had eight points and three assists. Pratt was led by a game-high 20 points from Jada Caitlin and a near triple-double from Megan Poole who finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and nine blocked shots.
The grind of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference will continue next Wednesday for Dodge City, who will travel to Coffeyville to take on the Lady Red Ravens on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m. Coffeyville would on 15 threes in the first matchup to take an 87-69 win over the Conqs in Dodge City.
