DC3 Women's Basketball Drops 65-40 Home Game To #6 Hutch

DODGE CITY, Kan. - Playing their second-consecutive game against a top-6 opponent, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team never could recover from a a 15-1 first quarter deficit in a 65-40 loss to the Blue Dragons in a game moved up a day due to the incoming winter storm.

DC3 is now 3-14 on the season and 3-10 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference under first-year head coach Zach Loll while the Blue Dragons moved to 16-1 and 12-1 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson's only blemish on the year was to No. 4-ranked and undefeated Seward County in Jayhawk Conference action.

Hutch would score the first 10 points of the game before a Baily Shelor free throw would finally break a 5:45 scoreless streak to get the Conqs on the board. The Blue Dragons would go on to score the final five points of the quarter to take a 14-point advantage just 10 minutes into the game.

A more competitive second-quarter would see the Conquistadors start to finally have jumpers fall, but it would not be enough as Hutchinson would lead by as many as 20 before taking a 32-13 halftime lead.

Struggles similar to the first quarter would return in the third as Hutchinson would build on their lead and put the game well in hand. The fourth quarter would find Dodge City outscore the Blue Dragons 15-7 as Hutchinson would shoot just 2-12 in the final 10 minutes.

Field goals would be hard to come by as the Conquistadors would shoot just 11-51 (21.6%) and go five of 20 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. Free throw shooting would not be much better, as the Conqs went just 61.9 percent (13-21) from the line. Rebounding would be another big issue for the Conqs as Hutchinson would hold a 51-27 advantage on the glass.

Sophomore Alexus Johnson would be the only DC3 player in double figures, finishing with 15 points and pulling in five rebounds. Taylor Nichols and Dasia Johnson each had six points while Baily Shelor and Cardelia Allen ended up with five points each. Hutchinson was led by 14 points from Bride Kennedy-Hopoat.

With the game being moved to tonight, Dodge City will get an extra day of rest before playing their next game on Wednesday of next week. The second half of the KJCCC schedule will start for the Conqs with a road game at Cloud County in Concordia on January 18th.
