Men's Soccer Drops Home Opener to Mavericks 3-1

DODGE CITY, Kan. - A lightning quick start by the Dodge City Community College men's soccer team was to good to be true as the visiting Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Mavericks scored three unanswered goals to drop the Conquistadors 3-1 in their 2016 home opener at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City on Monday afternoon.

The loss leaves DC3 still searching for their first win of the season at 0-1-1 while the Mavericks improve to 2-1 overall and 16-2-2 all-time against Dodge City.

Pushing the pace early, DC3 found themselves with a golden opportunity less than three minutes in as sophomore Jaime Scott set up freshman Irvin Rodriguez who put one past the Maverick goalie to give the Conquistadors an early 1-0 lead. The lead would be short-lived though as NOC-Tonkawa would use a free kick from the top right corner of the box following a foul to knot the score at one at the 10:10 mark. Tonkawa would use that goal as momentum to control both the pace of play and possession for much of the first half, out shooting Dodge City 7-3 as neither team could break the deadlock in the first half.

Following halftime, nearly 23 minutes would be played before the Mavericks would find a go-ahead goal from Felix Mora at the 67:48 mark to give NOC a 2-1 lead. Needing an equalizer, DC3 tried to push the pace of play and aggressiveness of the game, leaving themselves open for a counter which the Mavericks would find leading to a goal off a scrum from a deflected cross to take a 3-1 lead in the 68th minute.

Despite multiple chances off of free kicks just outside the box, DC3 was turned away by the Maverick goalie nine times in the second half as the Conquistadors could not add another goal.

NOC-Tonkawa out shot the Conquistadors 19-12 and held a 12-7 shots on goal lead. Each goalie made six saves in the game to go along with being credited three corner kicks each.

Dodge City will next be in action on Friday, September 2nd at Cowley College at 5:30 p.m. The series has been historically close between the Conquistadors and Tigers with Cowley winning five of the eight games.
