Slow Second Half Start Drops DC3 Women's Hoops In Home Loss

DODGE CITY, Kan. - Rebounding woes combined 20 turnovers sent the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team into the holiday break with a 90-76 home loss to Northwest Kansas Tech on at the Student Activities Center in Dodge City on Thursday, December 15th.

DC3 is now 3-9 overall on the year while the Mavericks picked up their 17th win of the year to improve to 17-1.

The first quarter was as tight as they come with Northwest Tech jumping out to a seven point lead with 2:54 left in the quarter. Dodge City would end the quarter on a 7-0 run to tie things at 17 heading into the second and look to build on the momentum gained. After taking their first lead to open up the second quarter on a Kyra Fennell layup, both DC3 and NWKT would combine for eight total lead changes in the first half. The Mavs would close out the second quarter by scoring the final five points to take a 35-31 lead at intermission.

The second half was a familiar story for the Conquistadors, who would be outscored 31-21 in the third and look to make up the deficit heading into the fourth. A comeback would not be in order for Dodge City as Northwest Tech would respond to every shot the Conqs would make to hold onto the 14 point victory.

"The last four minutes of the second quarter is when we stopped rebounding the ball and the consistency was no longer there" said head coach Zach Loll in a post-game interview with Damon Post. "We didn't have a lot of passion or enthusiasm tonight which is always tough when you play this close to Christmas break, but it is something that our girls need to learn to fight through."

Dodge City was out-rebounded by a margin of 48-36 in the game and allowed 17 second-chance points compared to 13 for the Conquistadors. DC3 shot 28 of 71 (39.4%) from the field and hit just five of 23 treys (21.7%).

Alexus Johnson led all scorers with 29 points and added six rebounds while Dasia Johnson was the only other Dodge City player in double figures with 10 points. Northwest Kansas Tech had four players in double-figures led by Tran Brown with 24 points.

The Mavericks and the Conquistadors will do battle again on December 30th at 2 p.m. MDT in Goodland, Kansas.
