ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - Hoping to build momentum off of Wednesday night's home win over Barton, the Dodge City Community College women's basketball team could not overcome 50 percent shooting from Cowley County Community College in a 105-54 road loss in Arkansas City on Saturday, December 10th.
DC3 is now 3-8 overall and 3-6 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Tigers are 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the KJCCC.
Trailing 12-0, DC3 would finally get on the board just over three minutes in on a
Baily Shelor jumper and would slowly try to fight their way back into the game thanks in part to some timely three-point shooting. Trailing 20-10 just over halfway through the first quarter, Cowley and Dodge City would trade buckets down the stretch as the Conquistadors would trail 28-19 at the end of one.
The second quarter would be one to forget for the Conqs as the Tigers would again score the first 12 points of the quarter and build a lead as large as 31 points before taking a 58-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
An ice cold start by both teams would give Dodge City a glimmer of hope after scoring the first five points of the half and cutting into the Cowley lead, but it would not last as the Tigers would again start to hit shots from just about anywhere on the court and hold their lead at 32 points heading into the fourth.
Getting outscored 22-2 in bench points in the final quarter, Dodge City would see the game finally come to an end as Cowley would use a suffocating defense to allow just nine fourth quarter points.
The Conqs would shoot 29.9 percent (20-67) from the field despite hitting seven of their 20 shots beyond the arc (35.0%). Cowley would outscore Dodge City 30-18 in the paint and use 15 second chance points along with 74 points off the bench. DC3 would also be out-rebounded 52-20 in the contest.
Alexus Johnson would be the lone bright spot for the Conquistadors in the game, scoring 23 points and pulling down six boards.
Dakota Hoffman and
Jakyia Chambers would each score six points off the bench while
Taylor Nichols had a team-high seven rebounds. Cowley was led by Kaitlyn Potter with 21 points.
The KJCCC schedule will take a brief break for the Conqs, who will play their next two games against Northwest Kansas Tech to finish out 2016. DC3 will host the Mavericks next Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
