DC3 Picks Up First Home Win of Season

DODGE CITY, Kan. - The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team led for 33:02 and by as much as 19 points in a 70-51 home win over Colby Community College in a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference matchup at the Student Activities Center in Dodge City on Saturday, November 26th.

DC3 snaps a two-game skid with the win while improving to 2-5 and 2-3 in the KJCCC while Colby falls to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

The first quarter would feature two lead changes to go along with two ties as the Conquistadors would trail 15-14 at the end of one. A big second quarter thanks in part to six of Brittany Leonard's eight first-half points would allow for Dodge City to close out the final seven minutes of the half on a 14-2 run after trailing 21-20 to be up 34-23 at the half.

With the third quarter being a problem in recent games for the Conqs, DC3 would build their lead up to 17 points on an Alexus Johnson trey with 6:38 left in the quarter. Colby would close the gap to 10 with 3:33 left in the quarter when the Conqs would go on a 10-2 run to go up by 18 points. Alexus Johnson would then give Dodge City their largest lead of the game on another three-point basket at 59-40 as the Trojans would again cut the lead to 10 with 4:16 left in the game. Defensive intensity would pick back up for DC3, who would not allow another basket to Colby while scoring nine points of their own to match their largest lead and come away with a convincing victory.

"The key to the game was that we finally came out and decided to defend on defense" said head coach Zach Loll in a post-game interview. "We kept their three main scorers from getting on a roll and giving them a lift and it was something that we emphasized all week." "Colby's offense is rather erratic, and our girls did a good job of getting some key rebounds to hold them to only 15 second chance points."

DC3 shot 41.2 percent (21-51) from the field and hit seven of 17 (41.2 %) from beyond the arc while hitting 21 of 23 free throws (91.3%). Colby was limited to just two free throws in the game and shot 32.4 percent from the field (22-68).

Alexus Johnson led all scorers with 21 points in the game to go along with five defensive rebounds while Leonard finished with 13 points and three assists. Baily Shelor was the only other player in double-digits, finishing with 14 points and five rebounds.

A renewed rivalry will take place on Wednesday as the Conquistadors will make the short trip west on highway 50 to play Garden City Community College on Wednesday, November 30th. Tip-off from the Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex is set for 6 p.m.
