CHANUTE, Kan. - An 18-4 Neosho County run in the middle of the third quarter continued the second half woes for the Dodge City Community College women's basketball in a 76-57 road loss to the Panthers in Chanute on Tuesday, November 22nd.
DC3 falls to 1-5 and 1-3 the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while Neosho improved to 4-4 and 1-3 in the KJCCC.
The Conqs would come out ready to play in the first quarter, jumping all over the Panthers and leading by as many as 10 points with 3:04 left in the quarter. DC3 would take a 23-16 lead into the second quarter, and see Neosho take a 35-31 lead at the half. Reminiscent of last Saturday vs. Coffeyville, the Panthers would get hot from beyond the arc in the third quarter en route on their 18-4 run to take a 59-43 lead after three quarters. With the brunt of the damage being done, DC3 would keep pace with the Panthers in the final stanza, falling by 19 on the road.
"We must rebound the ball and defend better, which is the same points that we have been stressing all year" said head coach
Zach Loll in a post-game interview. "We are still missing too many shots in the paint which puts us in the situations that we get in."
Neosho would shoot just 14 for 41 (34.1%) in the first half, but would make up for it in the second by shooting 45.7 percent (16-35) in the second half to shoot 39.5 percent from the field in the game. After hitting only two treys in the first half, the Panthers would hit five of 10 threes in the second compared to only two of 11 shooting from beyond the arc by the Conqs (18.2%). NCCC out-rebounded Dodge City 51-30 on the glass and pulled in 18 offensive rebounds compared to only 10 offensive boards for the Conquistadors.
Freshman
Baily Shelor led DC3 with 13 points and three rebounds while
Brittany Leonard had 12 points and two assists.
Taylor Nichols would add 11 points off the bench which included hitting all five of her free throw attempts.
Alexus Johnson finished with only nine points, her first time this season without reaching double-figures.
