Long Range Red Ravens Too Much For DC3 Women's Basketball

DODGE CITY, Kan. - The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team was outscored by a score of 45-18 from beyond the arc as the visiting Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens handed the Conqs an 87-69 home loss at the Student Activities Center in Dodge City on Saturday, November 19th.

DC3 falls to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference while the Red Ravens improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

A slow-start put the Conquistadors in an early hole in the first quarter as Coffeyville would shoot 50 percent from the floor in the first 10 minutes of the game while holding Dodge City to only four field goals to go up 26-10 at the end of the first quarter. DC3 would look to claw their way back into the game to cut into the lead closing within nine on a pair of Dasia Johnson free throws with 7:47 left in the first half, but again could not hit any timely field goals which would allow the Red Ravens to go up by as much as 19 and lead by 17 at the break.

The Tide would have appeared to be turned in the third quarter as the Conquistadors would score the first six points of the quarter and use a 13-3 run capped off by an Alexus Johnson trey to cut the Coffeyville lead to 54-49 with 2:36 left in the frame. CCC would score the final five points of the quarter however to re-open an eight-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

Coffeyville would make the most of the fourth, using four of their seven made field goals in the quarter from long distance to give them a total of 15 for the game. DC3 would have no answer for the Red Ravens hitting from distance, as both three-point attempts by the Conqs in the quarter would be missed.

"We knew Coffeyville had some shooters on their team, and we played a lot of different defenses today but did not do a good enough job of closing in on their shooters" said head coach Zach Loll in a post-game interview. "We have to do a better job of focusing and knowing what the scouting report is or you see a team like Coffeyville shoot 40 percent from the field." We are leaving too many points on the floor and we should be shooting well above what we did today and that comes down to missing too many open layups."

Dodge City would finish 27-69 (39.1%) from the field compared to 21-58 for the Red Ravens (36.2%), but would see that large disparity of three-point field goals be the difference in the game. The Conqs would connect on 87.5 percent (21-24) attempts from the charity stripe.

Alexus Johnson led the team with 21 points and 11 rebounds to record a double-double while Taylor Nichols had 14 points off the bench. Freshman Baily Shelor had 11 points and four rebounds while Cardelia Allen scored seven points in 21 minutes of action.

The schedule gets no easier for the Conquistadors, who travel to Neosho County for a Tuesday night conference clash starting at 5:30 p.m. Neosho is 3-3 this season and 0-2 in the KJCCC heading into a road game at Independence on Saturday afternoon.
