Conquistador women eager to bounce back Saturday vs. Barton

DODGE CITY, Kan. -- The Dodge City Community College women's basketball team is looking to put Wednesday's loss to No. 8 Hutchinson behind it when it takes on Barton 1 p.m. Saturday at the Dodge City Civic Center.

The Conquistadors (14-4 overall, 4-3 KJCCC) suffered a 90-48 defeat to the Blue Dragons on Wednesday - its worst loss in a season where DC3 has already surpassed last season's total for overall and KJCCC wins.

The Conqs have proven to be resilient as they haven't lost back-to-back contests this season. In the game after its previous three losses, DC3 is winning by an average of 19.7 points.

The Conqs continue to have four players averaging double figures in Talisha Presley (15.4), Rachel Slattery (14.8), Antania Newton (14.3) and Alexus Johnson (10.8). Slattery leads the conference in rebounds (12.4) and field goal percentage (68.1) and is second in blocks (2.6) while Newton leads the conference in 3-point percentage (49.4).

As a team, DC3 is second in the KJCCC in scoring (82.8 - 10th in the nation), field goal percentage (44.8) and 3-point percentage (35.9) while leading the conference in rebounds (48.3) and assists (20.1).

Barton (10-8, 2-5) is coming off a 64-58 loss at home against Garden City on Wednesday. The Cougars are 2-2 in their last four KJCCC games since dropping their first three conference contests.

Barton has three players averaging double figures in scoring in 5-foot-10 Megan Jirak (11.9), 5-foot-9 Jalisa Jones (11.8) and 5-foot-10 Kilee Harris (10.8). Jirak - like DC3's Slattery - is averaging a double-double as she is grabbing 10.5 rebounds per contest.

Barton is averaging 71.2 points per game while allowing 60.9 points per contest this season. The Cougars are third in the KJCCC in 3-point attempts per game (23.2) and are shooting 29.7 percent from beyond the arc - 10th in the KJCCC.

Barton is sixth in the conference in rebounding (41.2), but is first in offensive rebounds at 17.2 per contest.

Dodge City has dropped its last four games against Barton, last winning Feb. 6, 2013, in Dodge City (71-68).
