DODGE CITY, Kan. — The Dodge City Community College football team looks to start the season 2-0 and snag a win over a rival when the Conquistadors travel to take on Garden City Community College 7 p.m. Saturday at BroncBuster Stadium.
Both teams are coming off wins on the road in their opener. The Conquistadors flattened Ellsworth Community College 51-21 behind 504 yards of offense while Garden City edged Highland Community College 36-28.
In DC3's victory, quarterback
Tommy Lazzaro in his Conquistador debut went 14-for-21 for 280 yards and a pair of touchdowns with
Justin McInnis (five receptions, 148 yards, 2 TDs) and
Christian Booker (four receptions, 135 yards, TD) each racking up more than 100 yards of offense.
The Conquistadors showed off their balanced attack by rushing for 157 yards at 4.6 yards per carry.
Anthony Stephens led the way with 74 yards on nine carries and a touchdown while Florida-commit
Mark Thompson had 51 yards and a score in the blowout win.
Defensively for DC3,
Quandreko Statham led way with 16 tackles (three for losses) and had an interception.
Gary Johnson added an interception to go along with 12 tackles while
Dion Dawson had two of the team's four sacks.
As for Garden City in its win last week, it had 320 yards of offense with 293 of those coming through the air.
The offense runs primarily through quarterback Jayru Campbell as he either passed or rushed the ball on 89 of Garden City's 92 plays. He went 27-for-56 for 293 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions while rushing 33 times for 34 yards.
Jeff Thomas was his top target as the 6-foot-3 sophomore caught seven passes for 83 yards and two scores.
The Garden City defense allowed 318 yards and forced four turnovers (three interceptions and a fumble). Defensive lineman Jeremy Faulk (6-2, 265) had a team-high 10 tackles (four for loss), had the team's lone sack and forced and recovered a fumble.
The two schools located a little more than 50 miles apart played last season in Dodge City with the Conquistadors coming on top 41-21 at Memorial Stadium. DC3 racked up 582 yards of offense in the victory.
